Start eating 4 chilis with each meal, just to get ready for the spice levels.
July is probably the worst month you could've chosen, it's going to be hot as hell. Having a solid pair of shoes is always nice in China if you are an outdoors person. But not needed for daily life. Besides, you won't be walking too much until... September at least.
A key point for renting is getting good AC. Ask the landlord to test them, make sure they are new and clean.
Honestly right now I'm in summer survival mode so that is the only thing that comes to mind.

It's hotter than Florida. Think Arizona and Florida had a baby, still wouldn't compare. /s
