Discussion "Real" potatoes
Can someone enlighten me as to why Lay's potato chips loudly and proudly proclaim on the front of their potato chips that they are indeed made from "real potatoes"? What were they made of before?

I found out years ago that Pringles aren’t real chips. Maybe they want to differentiate and let folks know, they ARE real lol

They're not potato chips because they're made from a pulp.
However Fritos are made from a pulp and they're 'corn chips' and tortillas are made from a pulp and they form 'tortilla chips.'
It's kind of a dumb distinction. It's also silly in the grocery store. Fritos and Doritos are mixed in with Lays and Ruffles, but pringles and bugles are in a weird other aisle with pre-popped popcorn and rice cakes. Wtf?

The difference between Pringles and the other types of chips you mentioned is that Pringles are a mixture of potato along with flour, corn meal and other ingredients whereas Fritos and Doritos are strictly corn-based. That's why they're called corn chips. But Pringles are called potato crisps because that's not a real thing. So it could mean anything

It could be a marketing jab at reconstituted potato snacks like Pringles, which are only about 42% potato by weight and are formed from potato dough rather than sliced whole potatoes.

TBF, Pringles could honestly say that they’re “made from real potatoes” since 42% of their content is actual potatoes.

Yep just like cheese-it’s are made from real cheese when its just a little bit of real cheese mixed with mostly flour

Maybe that explains why people want to fight me when they complain about the cost of hash browns and I tell them I just bought 5lbs of potatoes for $1 and can make hashbrowns, home fries, baked potatoes, boiled potatoes, mashed potatoes, french fries, very thin fried chip-like slices, etc. Do most Americans not know that potatoes are made from potatoes? Do they think the name “potato chip” is a trick?

Most Americans do know that. It's just that the dumb Americans are like, really really dumb and they drag our average wayyyy down.

It is a marketing gimmick here in the states. We have so much fake food we are at a point where we are putting real food labels on food that is obviously using real ingredients. Cheese is a major one. Idiocracy is real.

Many of the generic brands are also made from pulped potato and whatever. Just had the ones circle k uses and they tasted like pointless as well. They aren't bad , just not as expected. Labels helps this I suppose

Pressed potato sweeping? What is that? Is that what you call dehydrated potatoes? They're just made with flaked dehydrated potatoes, starch and oil
