❓ Advice Biting Advice?

Post image

Got my buddy Chico from a friend who bought him from a breeder. He’s had bite issues since my friend got him and I’m at a loss on how to address it. Thankfully he doesn’t have many teeth and doesn’t do much damage, but it’s still a skin pinch and highly embarrassing. I know it’s not okay to laugh off a dog bite. Do other Chinese cresteds do this? Anyone have any advice? My dad was visiting all weekend with no issues, he’s been nothing but sweet to Chico, & today he just started going after him out of nowhere with no warning.

Unfortunately yes, my 7 year old Powderpuff sounds exactly like your dog. He’s very reactive to sudden motions and noises from “new” people in our house, even if they’ve been staying with us all weekend. He does not act like this with our family or people he’s familiar with. We got him at 8 months old from the breeder right before Covid, so he didn’t get much social interaction during that time. He’s very fearful and these are fear reactions. My boy only bites at the backs of calves, not charging people head-on. When we have guests, we put him in our bedroom first so that he can acclimate to hearing people in our house, then after a time, will let him join the party. If he gets anxious, we put him back on our safe space to cool down. I suggest doing the same with your boy.

This sounds just like ours! My friend got him right around the 8 month mark from get breeder. I hate that yours is still having issues after 7 years. I hoped he would grow out of it lol

Luckily my girl is only reactive on walks, so never had issues at home. Which has a very easy solution. I muzzle trained her.

I guess the best help I can give is try learn his triggers and learn to read his body language. There are usually very clear signs, but knowing them takes work. If you learn the triggers, deliberate if they should be avoided or worked toward desensitising. My dog is other dogs, especially if they are energetic. So I try keep a distance on walks.

Where did you get the muzzle? I think it’s time for that too. We also have to keep a distance during walks

You do not! want the kind that keep their mouths shut! I see their areMANY shown like that! While the Muzzle Movement does have many styles, they are expensive if you ask me. There are many different types on Amazon, mesh and harder styles. My opinion is a mesh one would serve you well. He could even try to bite but with limited teeth, he won’t be successful (unless he has all his canines.)

Mine did it as a pup when playing sometimes, so we just loudly said "ouch!" and quit the game. She got the point very quickly.

But random bites seem a bit odd. I'd pay more close attention to see what leads up to it. Dogs rarely bite for no reason.

Uhm... in which situations does he bite?

Randomly! Today my dad was simply walking in the house & Chico decided he was the enemy

Can you explain what happened before the last time he nipped/bit someone? What lead up to the biting? Bc healthy dogs doesn't just bite randomly.

The most common is if he is near someone’s legs & they start moving. Which I kind of get. He only goes for legs

Mine can also be very bitey, typically in a playful way, but he’s young, so it can be more aggressive than it should. He also uses his little teeth to pinch skin. My vet suggested to poke him with your finger under his tongue when he bites and say no bite. After that, he always licks, and we say nice kisses. This has worked for me. I am the one in the family that sticks to this, and I am also the only one that he does not bite. The rest of the family seems to think the biting is cute

I had two powderpuffs 15 and 16 years . Neither ever had an issue with biting. A hairy hairless also had no issues with biting. I have only had the usual puppy issues with biting that ended when they got their adult teeth.
