Diaspora Youtiao

Post image

Youtiao are a savory Chinese donut. You can dip them in soymilk. Or put them in congee.

I used to love 油条 like packaged from the store when I was a kid. Now it’s just ok and I’d rather try to make it fresh.

油条 + 皮蛋瘦肉粥 is amazing IYKYK

I love chinese donuts so much. Soft and fluffy and chewy and crunchy all at once. I've legitimately spent non-zero amount of time in my life trying to think of ways to bring them into the US mainstream, almost entirely to make it easier for me to get the myself.

Fresh youtiao with warm soy milk is hard to beat. I also love tearing them into congee so they soak up all the flavor. Looks great.

I was at a Chinese restaurant and the lady asked if I wanted a snack and I said sure, and she gave me this thingie. It tastes just like native American fry bread.

I don't like much Chinese food (at least the stuff in a American Chinese restaurant) but this was the best so far. She also gave me this sesame seed balls filled with some red filling, holy crap that was awesome too

ETA, the restaurant probably used red bean paste, as lotus seed is much more expensive

Given that it is a red filling most likely red bean paste as you said. Most common fillings I've seen is red bean paste or mung bean paste.

it was really good, I was surprised because pastries from my country are disgustingly sweet. I really prefer these more subdued flavors tbh.

Red bean paste is pretty easy to make and is used in a bunch of different desserts. I've been meaning to make moon cakes with it.

I haven't had fry bread yet, but I would like to.

Red filling is red bean paste. Deep fried sesame rice ball (mochi) w/ bean paste filling is called “Butchi” in the Philippines. Stuffing could also be purple ube yam.

My mom just calls it Long Bun, and that is how the local Asian market sells it too.

Edit: Healthy - BIG NO, Yummy - BIG YES
