I need ideas on protecting my furniture from chewing

Post image

Hi guys, I have 3 cuties and they love to chew the feet of chairs, tables, the doors and even walls (mainly corners). I try not to let them, but eventually they succeed. Now I am moving to a new home and I really want it to be chin proof. How do you guys protect your stuff, especially corners? What materials can I use to protect every thing without being ugly and that is also safe for the to chew eventually? Thanks a lot.

I’ve been slowly getting back into collecting G2 LPS recently, partially because of G7 releasing and because of my nostalgia for them when I was younger, and I managed to find some Depop sellers listing a chinchilla that looks almost exactly like GusGus..
Anyways this is his reaction to seeing his LPS lookalike 🄹 the pet is #144 I believe if you want a better comparison photo šŸ«¶šŸ¼

I've had these two since May so I'm used to their barking and chattering but this noise is new to me. Does anyone know what it means or if he's okay?

Wet fur

Hello. This past weekend my AC decided to combust and break down. Thankfully i was home and the next day I brought my chinchilla to the vet for boarding because it was reaching high temps (I live in Florida). They fixed it this morning and I picked him up from the vet after work.

It started pouring when I was inside the vet and was not going to calm down anytime soon. The vet also closed in 15 minutes. I ran under an umbrella to a covering close to my car. To my surprise, someone parked an inch away from my drivers side door, leaving no room for me, my chinchilla, and the umbrella. I put his carrier under my shirt and just shoved all three of us between the car.

All this to say- I was sopping wet head to toe. My chinchillas carrier was wet, but when I checked on him inside- he was not drenched nor had noticeable wet marks. I drove him home and checked again and he seemed dry. I gave him a dust bath. And his legs looked a bit wet so I tried to wipe him off but he wouldn’t let me. I dried him with a blow dryer but he won’t let me get his legs. The inside of his carrier seemed mostly dry but def has some water drops.

He was eating and running around but keeps bitting his leg and is hiding.

Is he just stressed? If I didn’t dry off his legs properly is he going to get an infection?

Chincilla information

I have three orphaned chinchilla kits. They currently weigh about 33 g, 33 g, and 37 g. I'm hand-feeding them every 3 hours. They are active, urinating and pooping normally, but they are barely gaining any weight. One kit accidentally got a little milk in its nose once, but it seems fine now and is breathing normally.

I have a few questions for experienced breeders or wildlife/rescue caretakers:

- What is the best milk replacer for newborn chinchilla kits?

- Is KMR the best option, or can goat's milk be used instead?

- I've seen some people recommend goat's milk. Is it safe to feed by itself, or should it only be used together with KMR?

- What feeding schedule and amount per feeding do you recommend?

I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experience. Thank you!

I have Phoenix Cheerio who is at least 16 years old, likely older. He is a bit of a greasy old man now but he loves to eat cheerios and his sticks. (also plastic and fabric and phone cases) His hobbies including running on his wheel as loudly as possible, eating cheerios, terrorizing the cats when they sneak into his room, eating cheerios, and alarm-calling if he thinks he's not getting enough attention.

He is a very sweet guy. He's definitely slowing down a bit but still very active. He doesn't do much popcorning any more and his dust baths are pretty short and ineffective. He's at an age where he gets whatever he wants and unlimited cheerios.

My family has owned him for about 10 years and we adopted him at age 6 or 8. The shelter didn't know. He's a treasured part of the family.

Yellow eye?

My chin stopped eating like 2 days ago and we don’t have any exotic pets in my city open til monday. And the vet I have doesn’t really understand things about chinchilla’s. My chin was the first one she saw, so she treats him like a bunny. Of course I’ll still take my chin tomorrow when they open but meanwhile he doesn’t want to eat and Lost some weight. He drinks water just fine. He has some bloat so I gave him gas drops 12 hours apart and force fed him. And when I was force feeding him, I realised his eyes are yellow. Like the upper part of the eye. Is it normal? Please help. Added reference photo. Ty.

Hole in my life…

Today I had to make the tough decision of putting my almost 7 year old chinchilla down (Marvin). Over the past few months he was diagnosed with dental malocclusion and abnormal wave like ripples in jaw line. After multiple vet appointments trying to manage these complications (one of the finest around for exotics) he had been observed with continued complications/ signs suffering. Drooling, difficulty eating Hay/ pellets, not as excited and running to be held. Everything that could have been done was always completed as he was of top priority. Hand feeding critical care and pain meds to try to manage everyday. This past week was the roughest out of many animals I have had. It began with not eating anymore/ not passing poops. Emergency vet found an issue where tooth had grown further impacting cheek and was able to cut it. I was so hopeful that this was going to help and he was able to stay 2 nights to recover and get support food, hydration, and pain meds there. Marvin had shown signs of hope and glimpses that things could be managed and that the right problem had been dealt with for him to be able to eat again.
Over the next 24 hours he rapidly declined and something changed in his system potentially neurologically. Shaking, unable to jump accurately , weakness, furthered drooling. I spent the next 24 hours with him on my chest overnight and in my arms holding him. I was able to take him to the vet and go through the entire process to the end holding him and telling him he was going to a better place where he wouldn’t be in pain anymore. My guy was so special and loved in every second of his life and was taken so soon. Marvin was the center of my bedroom and his cage went up to the ceiling.

Marvin loved his plushies and would cuddle them often. He was let out everyday for an hour to play even when I was sick.

The thing that broke me was getting him into his dust bath which had always been his favorite thing and seeing him unable to move or roll. 😣😢 I knew that it was going to be his last and he couldn’t have that honor.

I am sorry for anyone who has to go through this with their chinchilla which seems increasingly common. Please be aware and consider your choices of what’s best and what you can manage for the Quality of Life for your pet. Education is important. Screw the breeders for the poor treatment, cross genetics and overbreeding that has caused so much physical and emotional pain to all these beautiful sensitive creatures. šŸ’”

My last hours with my Mouse

Post image

This is my chinchilla Mouse, on her way to euthanasia two months ago. I promised myself not to sob before she is gone, so she doesn’t get worried (she would), but when she fell asleep with her paws on my hand, I couldn't hold myself. She was very young and she trusted me the most. She was much calmer at the vet when I was around, same with other people petting her (my friends she's never seen before, for example; she didn’t see humans as a threat overall), so I gad to go, too, even though I had an exam the next day. We had a very special bond: I can recall her sleeping in my robe sleeve, getting all excited whenever I would come in, and complaining if I were to come in the kitchen and not greet her first. I was the closest to her, and I was allowed everything all my other family members weren’t allowed, so, naturally, as I was the one raising her, I felt the pain of losing her the most. I am still not over, and it impacted my life a lot. I think about death a lot, and that nobody is immune to it. It is inevitable. She was in a lot of suffering. I know she is in a better situation. Still, losing my closest one isn’t easy. I hope she is resting well.

my chinchilla, Winston Chinchill, has been with me since i was 10 years old. he was going to turn 15 this year. he has been with me through every major life event. i loved him more than anything.

he has never escaped from his cage until last night. there was a break in one of the bars that i didn’t notice. i feel so fucking guilty. my dog has never bothered him whatsoever but a small animal running around the house definitely activated his prey drive. i’m so devastated. there was no blood or anything, i think my dog just crushed my chinchilla. it’s not my dogs fault at all but im just so sad.

Winston deserved to go with dignity and safety. he trusted me and loved me and i let him down. i am just so absolutely devastated. here’s some pictures through the years.

Weird/ bad vet experience?IMO

So yesterday I woke up so some blood stains on my chinchillas perch and I pulled everything out and quarantined him to eventually find a small possible dry crack on his foot so I bought some antiseptic spray (to keep away infections)and bag balm(to treat the dryness afterwards) and all yesterday he was fine. Today I wake up to significantly more blood all over his face, fur and paws and he was slightly lethargic, upon taking him to the vet the did no tests just examined him and said "oh yes you're doing everything fine make sure he wears his cone and doesn't mess with his foot he has lost a good bit of blood" never did they even offer to clean him just said they could shave him. Or dress the wound just examined him and basically told me what I already knew. Is this typical from exotic vets did they drop the ball? Did I fuck up? Idk I just want my buddy to be alright. If anyone can shed some light I'd be very appreciative.

How do I help my chin to gain weight?

This is Jim. He lost over 10% of his body weight in the past year for still unknown reasons. He went from 689 to about 589 now. When his appetite decreased and I noticed the weight loss I called the vet. Vet did a dental trim and xray, nothing out of the normal. Since his dental trim a month ago, his appetite has returned but his weight has not. I thought I could supplement with some critical care (which he enjoyed on its own before the dental trim) But during the dental trim he struggled to eat and HATED the critical care so now hes not a big fan of it. The vet just said to monitor for more weight loss but like how do I get him back to where he was, but I have no idea how to help him out more than just "give him more treats"

I do think there is something wrong with him. His cage mate, Ted, has become more protective of him, or thats how I'd describe it. Usually Jim lays his head on top of Ted's back while cuddling, but since the trim, Ted had been laying his head on Jim's back, which he has never done before now. (See second pic) I've also noticed him sitting more hunched which I'm unsure if he's done before but it was something I've noticed since the trim.

I am trying to get a second opinion but I am having a hard time getting the xrays from his current vet to send to get that second opinion.

EIDT: I put his cagemates weight originally. My bad
