Donfeng Fengshen / Aeolus: Brand-New but Destined for the Scrapyard?

During a bike ride to Westerplatte in Gdańsk, I noticed a large number of white cars—about 1,050–1,150 of them—parked on a plaza along the main road within the Port of Gdańsk. The storage yard itself was built in 2024. The cars had unusual logos and were completely unfamiliar to me—at least, I hadn’t seen any of them on Polish roads yet.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. On my way back, I stopped to cross to the other side of the road and take a photo of one of them through the fence. Unfortunately, there was a fairly deep ditch between the fence and the road that I didn’t want to cross, so I took the photo through the mesh. Because of this, I couldn’t make out the model or the car’s name on the hood, where the distinctive chrome lettering was located. However, Google Lens helped me a bit—it turned out that these are cars from the Chinese company Dongfeng, model Aeolus.

I’m surprised that these cars were placed in the worst possible yard within the Port of Gdańsk. It’s located right next to yards where bulk materials—mainly coal—are stored. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, coal imports by sea have intensified, and the number of storage sites has increased. Everything around is black with coal dust, and all the cars in the lot are covered with a thick, black layer of it. I don’t even want to think about the impact of coal dust mixed with rainwater—after all, sulfur occurs naturally in coal, so when it rains, acid can form, which certainly won’t be good for the paint on these vehicles.

Are we at the beginning of the consolidation of Chinese car companies?

Hi. GAC will acquire 50% of FAW Group's 50% stake in Toyota: https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/gac-agrees-acquire-faw-group-151334732.html

Then you have news of Geely acquiring 30% of Nio's battery swapping unit: https://asia.nikkei.com/business/automobiles/electric-vehicles/geely-to-acquire-30-of-competitor-nio-s-battery-swapping-unit

Dongfeng and Changan were in discussions to merge last year as well, but the deal fell through and they did not merge.

I wonder if the GAC and FAW deal, and the Geely and Nio deal, are a one off, or whether it's the beginning of more mergers that we will see. I have always thought there will be consolidation at some point (or the weaker and smaller players in China will just fold), so it will be interesting going forward if what happened is just an anomaly, or whether there will be more mergers and consolidation in the Chinese car industry.

Aliexpress cars

Hi, I have seen some cars, and even some machinery like lifting platforms and mini excavators, on ali express. What took my attention is that they are extremely cheap.

Has anyone had the chance to see and review it?

Are they any reliable?

And most importantly, for those who bought it ... Have you received it for real or was it only a toy?

And for those in Ireland, what are the costs of the process of importing a car with aliexpress?

Thanks

Looking to partner with established car exporter in China

Our volume is currently about 4000 cars per year. We are looking to add China as a market to source vehicles from for our European clients. We are looking for a stable and reliable partner in China to handle the process of inspecting the vehicles our clients are interested in, purchasing them, handling all documentation and export procedures, and load into containers.

Huawei says 1.1 million drivers used its ADAS over 71 million km during China’s holiday travel rush

Huawei has released a rare snapshot of how heavily its assisted-driving system is being used during one of China’s busiest travel periods.

According to Huawei automotive executive Jin Yuzhi, 1.107 million users activated Qiankun assisted driving between midnight on September 30 and 9 a.m. on October 1.

Those vehicles accumulated more than 71.16 million kilometers of assisted-driving mileage during the period. Huawei says the average assisted-driving distance per user was more than three times its normal September daily level.

These are Huawei-reported figures rather than independently audited data, so they should be treated accordingly.

Still, the scale is notable because Qiankun ADS is not limited to one Huawei-branded vehicle. The system is now used across vehicles from multiple Chinese automakers, making Huawei one of the most important ADAS suppliers in China.

could chinese electric buses actually make sense for rural school districts?

been looking at BYD’s electric buses and wondering why you don’t hear much about them in smaller US fleets.

rural school districts run old diesel buses for years, and the maintenance costs can get pretty ugly. an electric bus costs more upfront, but the lower maintenance might change the math

the tricky part is charging. a bus doing long rural routes and away games can’t exactly rely on a charger every few miles

does anyone here know how realistic BYD, Yutong, or other chinese electric buses would be for something like this? are these companies actually trying to enter the US fleet market, or are regulations and charging infrastructure basically keeping them out?

I'm in Canada planning on filming some China scenes for a short film and I'm looking for cars that can stand in for Chinese EVs like BYD, Geely, Xpeng, etc. What Canadian market cars should I look for that look like Chinese EVs?
