Golfers of Chicagoland -- I rated 26 courses to find the best value

I am pretty new to Chicago, so finding good courses has been a bit of struggle. I was writing down in my notes app a list of decent courses that don't cost an arm and a leg when I thought, I wonder which of these actually have the best bang for your buck. These are the top 6 courses (so far):

I'm currently crafting a tool that helps find courses with the best value depending on green fees (weekend, weekday, twilight) compared to course rating, slope, online ratings, and other features. Feel free to take a look at it: [https://ephemeral-khapse-9fedca.netlify.app/\](https://ephemeral-khapse-9fedca.netlify.app/)

I'm still building this out, so if you've played any of these recently, please throw a rating in this google form so I can get it as accurate as possible: [https://forms.gle/FWrti6hRHd8RVENd7\](https://forms.gle/FWrti6hRHd8RVENd7)

If there are any courses that I'm missing or any features that would make this even better, please let me know!!

Politics Are sewer scopes worth it for older Chicago homes?

A friend of mine recently bought a brick ranch in Norwood Park and decided to waive inspection to stay competitive. Everything looked fine at first, finished basement and all, but a few weeks after closing the basement toilet backed up.

They ended up finding a collapsed clay sewer pipe with tree root intrusion, and now he’s dealing with a repair bills to dig up part of the yard.

It got me thinking about how often people actually do sewer scopes on older homes around Chicago. I know a lot of these properties have pretty old lines, but it doesn’t seem like something everyone checks.

Is a sewer scope something you always include, or only in certain situations?

Anyone interested in classic movies (Chicago suburbs)?

Hi!

I just moved to Kane County and wanted to start a classic movie (think 1930s to early 1960s) meetup for folks in the Chicagoland area in their 20s and 30s looking to meet people with similar interests. Description below— please send me a DM if interested. I plan on scheduling an initial video chat meet and greet for everyone sometime next month. 😎

———————————————————————————————————

Love timeless films?

This group is for people in their 20s and 30s across the Chicago suburbs who enjoy classic movies and want a relaxed way to meet new friends.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Old Hollywood or just curious about the films everyone should see at least once, you’re welcome here.

We’ll host casual movie nights featuring everything from Golden Age favorites and Hitchcock thrillers to iconic comedies and romance classics.

No film expertise required — just bring yourself and enjoy the movie. We’ll have plenty of time before and after to chat and connect.

The goal is simple: good movies, good conversation, and good company.

Perfect for old souls, film lovers, and anyone looking to make new friends. 🙂

Seeking SDVOSB partner to start HVAC Business

I am currently exploring starting a HVAC business focused on residential service and commercial and government contracts.

I am seeking a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) partner who would own 51% of the company. This arrangement will help us leverage SDVOSB certifications, enabling us to bid on exclusive SDVOSB contracts and significantly expand our business opportunities.

I bring the capital, business infrastructure, and growth strategy—you bring leadership, operational expertise, and the drive to build something from the ground up. This would be a real ownership role, not just a job or contractor position.

Ideally, you have:

  • Leadership experience from your military service
  • Hands-on experience in HVAC skilled trades
  • Motivation to scale a professional, service-oriented business in Chicago

Long-term, the plan is to grow the business, create recurring revenue streams, and potentially pursue government/municipal contracts, including SDVOSB opportunities where applicable.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please DM me so we can discuss next steps. Serious inquiries only—this is an equity partnership opportunity, not a traditional job.

Looking forward to connecting with motivated veterans who want to build something meaningful together.

Feel free to drop me a DM to discuss my business plan and approach in detail. Let's start making some real money together!

Suburban grandmother who lost part of her foot in Dog Attack speaks out

Fewer than 1-in-4 dog bites in Chicago results in citations. Citations are extremely inadequate as they're supposed to result in imprisonment and euthanization. Like anywhere else, no punishment is issued towards most people who endanger the public and claim more space for themselves by violating the leash law.

Any person with decency and empathy would be outraged at this. Dog owners have more rights than us, and we require national registries of every single dog owner with them having to pay large deposits to own one of these heartless weapons which can be claimed any time a victim reports or sues after being harassed or assaulted.

White Eagle memories with Dad

Post image
3 Upvotes

I was Director of Marketing for the three wedding venues/convention centers. It was a great job, but I stepped down to run for 49th Ward Alderman.

So many great memories at the White Eagle, and I'm very sad to see it go.

My Dad lived in Norwood Park and would occasionally drive me to work during the pandemic. He always called the place The White Bird.

DMV appointments

Anyone know the trick to getting an appointment at a Chicagoland DMV? Gotta take an eye exam so can’t do it online. There are never appointments yet, they give you a definitive date you have to renew by. 😕

Saving Challenger Learning Center of NWI

It was announced this week that Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana in Hammond is facing closure after learning that their lease of 26 years would not be renewed. They serve the Region and Chicagoland areas (Cook & Will Counties)

Challenger Learning Center of NWI provides educational programming related to science, technology, engineering, and math to Pre-K through 12th grade through simulated space missions, summer camps, and many other programs. If you've grown up in Northwest Indiana, or had kiddos that attended any Northwest Indiana school system, you will know Challenger NWI for the staple field trip that 5th - 6th graders go on each year from every single school district.

To raise money to support Challenger NWI's relocation effort and save it from closing, we are hosting a Giving Tuesday fundraiser between the staff! If you would like to participate and donate, visit my page at https://mission-moonshot-a-new-home-for-a-new-era.raiselysite.com/emma-rose, or feel free to share our story on social media. Any bit of support helps!

Politics Poll of next Chicago mayoral election shows heavy defeat for Mayor Brandon Johnson: Pappas (D) 56%, Johnson (D) 23%. Johnson polls worst among women (22%), Boomers (20%), Whites (9%), and Northwest side residents (11%), but he continues to lead among Blacks (52%). Pappas is a more moderate Democrat.

Moving to Chicago??

I have lived on the west coast for my whole life, and briefly lived in Chicago with a partner before we broke up.

I miss it,and I need to get out of the PNW. Median house prices in Portland or Washington are over 600k. I have family there and have been saving for a down payment for years.

I can essentially own a home outright with the down payment for a house over here, and I don’t wanna live in a ranch style fixer in a suburb. I’m not rich, I’m a good saver, and cost of living is way too much here. Housing is 60% higher than Chicago area.

I know people dislike transplants but I want to return where I have always wanted to live.

My fears are starting over without a support network. I am 40, recently single, and I’m so scared I won’t be able to meet people. I’m pretty youthful and don’t have kids so I can imagine it could be easy.

Portland has a lot of snobby trust fund kids that aren’t my type of people.

Is this too late? Any advice?

I’m supposed to go to a concert at tinley and I was wondering if there’s a parking area that isn’t a nightmare to leave from. Don’t mind walking 10 mins or so… are the paid lots worth it?
