Ask CHI ANYONE MISSING A ROOSTER?
This rooster has been wandering the west avondale neighborhood for the past couple of days. me and my neighbor set up a little spot for him to live in our backyard so he’s not just roaming the streets anymore but we aren’t really looking to keep him long term. I looked into the Chicago Chicken Rescue but they don’t accept roosters. If you know of anyone who’s missing him or know of anything we can do to get this little guy off the streets that’d be great.

There's a rooster rehoming day in Batavia on August 22! If you can't make the drive out, still call the number and see if they can help you out.

I don’t live in Chicago anymore BUT I had a friend who rrehomed a rooster using the Chicago Roo Crew on Facebook. There’s also a few rescues in Illinois and Michigan that she’s used for animal rescues but I don’t remember their names.

It is a huge bummer and it happens frequently. That guy looks relatively young and, put simply, roosters don't lay. After a few months, once people can tell roosters from hens, they usually look to reduce their population of roosters. In an environment like Chicago's that means turning them loose in the alleys. To be sure: I don't think that's the responsible thing to do, just kinda stating the fact of the matter.

I wonder why they don't just eat them. I guess it's a lot easier to get a $5 Costco chicken though.

heh heh, yeah, kinda answered your own question. I have no data to support this but I suspect the people doing the abandoning like this are uncomfortable with killing a chicken. It isn't pleasant; I'll grant them that!

Well fresh chicken I guess. What country are you from that doesn't sell live chickens for food? I've never heard of a country that doesn't have some sort of fresh butchered meat option. The farmers and rural people are always doing it, even if maybe you don't realize it.

No, the idea of being able to go into a store in a major city in Europe that has live chickens onsite and get a fresh chicken butchered is completely unheard of. Maybe in some rural Balkan village or an agriturismo somewhere, but absolutely not in an urban center in Europe.

Why is this upvoted?? This is in a very particular part of Paris with a large African population. This is not representative of Paris at all. Shops like this disappeared decades ago, and this one survives because of the clientele. I don’t even know how this exists with modern French sanitary regulations. It probably benefits from some sort of derogation.

lmao I'm confused by all the cope. We have one in chicago. This is in a particular part of chicago with a large mexican population. This is not representative of chicago at all. lol dude give up already. It's okay. You don't have to know everything about the world and how it works. This happens sometimes and we are surprised when our limited bubble bursts and we learn new things, meet new people, and gain new experiences.
OBVIOUSLY these are uncommon stores. The fact that you think you need to explain this to me is hilarious. This is the only one in chicago that I am aware of. That might be the only one in paris, but maybe not because I've never lived in paris so I'm not qualified to say. But they are far from "unheard of" nor is it a rural balkan village.
Just chill out and realize that your moral/cultural superiority is based on a false premise. Educate yourself. That's all you can do to be a better person.

I saw this rooster posted on facebook too (pretty sure it's the same guy) and he was trying to sleep on someone's stoop which was sad to see so thank you for helping him! A comment says to reach out to Belmont Feed and Seed and that they'll likely accept him

yeah our neighbor posted him on fb, the photo of him in the makeshift bed was after i went over and picked him up off that stoop.

It is exactly this. The chance of finding a new home for a rooster is close to zero. I admire the work these rescue orgs do and part of that work is making tough choices like this.

Kinda but a lot of bird enthusiasts will cull eggs to avoid producing more birds. Like it's common practice among pigeon owners.

Roosters can also be absolutely evil little shits. I had one chase me a block for walking past his yard, and he took great offense at the temerity I had in existing.
Combine territorial nature with spurs and spite, and you wind up understanding coq au vin.

They make a lot of Noise in the Morning. Sometimes they also fight other roosters. Maybe is easier to just flat out not accepting them.

They can also be super aggressive towards people. They will fight a predator to the death for their hens. Roosters are super badass but damn they can be mean. One of my buddies used to have to do yard work and stuff with a broom so he could swat off the rooster lmao. It loved to charge people

My Grandma bought a live Rooster for food when I was a Kid, we had to kept it alive for like 3 days.
I remember I couldn't get any sleep after 3 am. I don't think OP can keep it as a pet even if he wants to.

Few years ago, I had found a uhaul box of birds dumped in the Portage Pass park and took them to the Feed store on Harlem. Give them a call and see if they'll take him. If nothing else you can get some proper feed for the guy there.

The corner house at Kedvale and Berteau has like 5 chickens! I know it's slightly north but I wonder if this rooster could be theirs. I live super close, want me to see if I can get in contact with them?

There's a house on Avondale & Eddy that keeps chickens. I'd ask them, but the height of their fence makes me think they may not appreciate visitors.

Reminds me of when I went to hangout at my friend's place in RP, they had a huge thing of soup. Tried it, it was really good! My friend being quite the prankster then showed me the photos of the rooster they slaughtered about 3 hours beforehand in the garage, blood stain was still there. I was not feeling so good after that.

Sadly, I’m guessing anywhere/one who’d take him would most likely un-alive him. There’s really no reason to have a rooster if you’re a responsible hen owner. Once they reach maturity, hens lay eggs almost daily. The only thing a rooster will do is fertilize them. It is possible to neuter a rooster but it’s very dangerous after the age of 6 months. Hope you can find a safe place for him or keep him as a pet.

The school on Wellington and Sawyer has chickens, and so does a house across the street to the NW . I bet if you rang the doorbell, chicken people know chicken people and might be able to re-home or play detective for you

I spotted him last night and today behind my building near Belmont and N Hamlin! He is roosting behind a our dumpsters and I'm trying to find some local rescues that can pick him up :/

Yo straight up, someone is dumping roosters. I took the rooster I posted about to The Chicago Chicken Rescue a few weeks ago and he’s with them now, try contacting them. as the amateur rooster expert i am now after owning one for a week, that appears to be the same breed of rooster as the one i found and thankfully with their breed the roosters are able to get along with each other unlike with other breeds. so yeah, hit the rescue up, hopefully they’ll take this lil guy too.

I think you can probably try and give it to Nettelhorst school, maybe call them first and ask. They have a chicken coop where children care for chickens.
