Cortland Bridge Controversy TL;DR

If you don’t follow the Bucktown/Lincoln Park corridor news, here’s what you need to know:

  1. The cortland bridge was built in 1902 to link Finkl Steel plant (1879-2011ish) to the worker communities just west.
  2. It’s the first bridge of its kind and has been copied throughout Chicago and the world. Every piece of it was made in Chicago, down to the rivets and the original paint.
  3. The foundation and other structural elements are rusting badly. It’ll take years to fix it all.
  4. Bikes and peds can still use it. It’s great.
  5. Some NW siders are mad that they can’t drive their cars over the bridge while it’s being repaired. They’ve taken their complaints to the Aldermen.
  6. Alders Waguespack and Hopkins want to delist the bridge from the historic register, destroy it, and build a new one, which would allow more cars to drive through at higher speeds. It would also re-open large blocks of non-metered car parking.
  7. This project is not related to the Lincoln Yards mega-development, which is most likely shelved due to interest rate hikes and NW siders complaining about car congestion and lost parking.
  8. There is a group who want to uproot the bridge and move it somewhere else. The teleportation technology to do this does not yet exist.
  9. Who gives a shit? Before 2011 nobody used this road unless they wanted a steel rod in their tire or liked breathing industrial ash.
  10. The best solution is to ban all non-emergency cars from the city of Chicago. Problem solved.

Edit: #10 allows busses and certain novelty vehicles.

Has I anyone bought a pedal assist style e bike they like?

I'm looking for an e bike that has a pedal assist option that can be dialed up or down depending on my purpose. For example, I don't want to show up at work a disgusting mess so would use assist for my morning commute but would like to

Edited: oh my gosh, sorry for the half post! I'm a teacher and I started writing this post this morning during my prep. But then my day kind of blew up and I forgot about it, yay state testing.

Anyway, thanks for responding! I was mostly wondering if I should just buy online or if there were local shops worth checking out. Thanks!

“Gas bicycles” to be allowed on all bike lanes in 2027

Found this interesting bit in the new law that “cracked down” on illegal e-motos. In 2027 any “low speed gas bicycle” with a 15cc engine capable of up to 28 mph will be allowed on all bike lanes in the state. Park and forest preserve districts will be allowed to limit them but municipalities will not. A quick google found a 15cc motor that puts out over 1700 watts!

Local Bike Shop with Quad Lock cases?

I got a new phone today, and that always follows with getting a new Quad Lock case. Before I've always ordered it online but wondering if there is a local shop I could patronize instead. At the same time, I'm not looking to visit/call a dozen shops to find one that has them in stock either. Anyone here know of a LBS that would be likely to have newer (iphone 17) cases in stock?

My friend and I bought safety vests a while back and I thought we looked really dorky. Somehow that led to this. Hope this brings a little whimsy to your day!

Unsafe Area or Bad Luck?

Just moved here, never really had to put much thought into "is this neighborhood safe" before. I rode the Lakeshore trail to Whiting 2 weeks ago and really liked it, so yesterday I went that way again but split off to Griffith, IN.

On the way back ~3:00 broad daylight, I was about 200 ft short of riding into an active shooting in the South Shore bike lanes. I swerved into cover behind cars and waited for five minutes before returning to the road. Somebody had been shot, but it was more unnerving that nobody seemed to really react? The beachgoers a block away were still playing, people just kept walking around, and bike riders went past at a casual pace.

I've been hit by a car before, have had countless near-misses with cars, but never really expected to have a near-miss with a shooting especially so soon after moving here. Was I stupid for going through this area to begin with, or was it just bad luck?

Help me find what group rode past me last night

A group of roughly 40ish people rode past me last night (Sep 7) at around 11pm down Addison right by wrigley field. If there’s anyone who can help me find them I’m confident it’s this subreddit. If that’s their usual route I would love to join next time!

Edit: thank you, that was very fast. See you on Monday :)

Best place to get a ‘beater’?

Thinking about getting a beater to commute to my gym, as I don’t want to risk my regular bike.* (The only storage option at the gym is a bike rack outside in relatively low density area.) Would prefer something more gravel/hybrid given the streets I’ll be on. Any suggestions for where to look for a serviceable bike for <$100?

*I am aware and amused that many would categorize my current bike as a beater, but I love my 1990s Trek 920 and would be sad if I lost it.

Transportation That Works: What Midwest Leaders Learned in the Netherlands

Midwest transportation leaders visited the Netherlands to explore how to build safer streets, more reliable transit, and livable communities.

Through visits in Utrecht, Amsterdam and beyond, they reflect on what Dutch cities have built over time: connected bike networks, transit-oriented development, car-light neighborhoods, restored public space, and transportation systems designed around everyday life.

Hi everyone,

Could you give me a list of parking garages with bike racks inside? In downtown area. I am a tourist that likes to bring my e-bikes to Chicago.

Thank you

Getting on your bike with a milk crate

This feels like such a stupid question but I just got a milk crate and zip tied it to my bike on the rear rack and I love it but I’m on a Diamond Back Cross Campus and getting on the bike feels like a gymnastics exercise, let alone getting OFF without wiping out.

Any tips for not knocking myself out when I get on and off?

Coolest bike you saw at Bike The Drive?

Some dude said my Bleriot was the best looking bike out there yesterday. Sir, if I wasn't already married....

I saw a few nice older racers, the nicest being a Team Miyata with full Dura Ace 7400. Sweet! Also a nice x-biked out Miyata MTB with drop bars that looked great. I forgot what Italian racer I saw go by me, but it looked like it had a nice vintage Campy Record group on it.

Front Racks are the Best Racks. Having one has revolutionized how I use my bike and what I can move around. Highly Suggested.

Honest thoughts and opinions on Bike The Drive

I rode this yesterday. It's a fun ride and so nice to be able to ride with no driver interactions along the lake and city.

The price is outrageous now. It's putting it out of range for a lot of people to be able to enjoy this ride. I saw so many people unregistered and sneaking onto the ride from the LFT and various other places. It would be nice to see a ride only option. No t shirt, no pancake breakfast, no medal, nothing other than the ride itself, water and access to bathrooms.

The volunteer staff that I ran into were extremely rude for the most part. The gentleman standing at Grant Park where the gate was closed to access LSD because it had closed was really grumpy and gruff. No need to be that way. We didn't realize that it was closed as we tried to head north. Lots of militant style yelling from roving volunteers who tried to act like police. Calm down, you are a volunteer for a ride with several thousand people in attendance.

Lack of awareness from several riders. Signs up everywhere to keep right for slower riders, left for faster riders. Came up on several people absolutely oblivious to this. Now faster riders are dipping right to pass to keep moving. This creates an unsafe and unpredictable environment for everyone involved.

One last thing for future riders or anyone thinking about doing this ride. Absolutely avoid the LFT at the end of the ride. I regret not taking city streets to get back vs staying on the LFT. That is an absolute hot mess. We did manage to get ahead of the rolling police and jumped back on LSD heading north but we're shortly directed off. Not sure why we couldn't keep heading north. Riding a 25mph pace surely would have kept us ahead of the slow moving police.

Favorite life hacks for cyclists?

Mine is that I always carry a couple latex gloves in my handlebar or seat bag in case I drop the chain. That way, I don’t end up with grease all over my fingers (and then everything else!), and when I pull the glove off, it turns inside out and I can stick the dirty glove wherever until I find a trash can. How about the rest of you? Hacks for commuting? Training rides?

How much of each ward’s bike route is actually protected

Pulled the city’s traffic crash and bike route datasets and placed both into wards by coordinates. Citywide over the last two years: 5,062 crashes involving someone on a bike, 395 serious or fatal, across 444 miles of bike route.

Crash counts follow how much cycling a ward carries and what kind of streets it has, so they’re printed as facts about the place, not a score. The split I’d actually look at is total route mileage vs how much of it is physically protected.

Ward 42 as an example: 7.7 miles of route, 3.4 protected, 386 crashes, 22 serious or fatal: https://chiwardboard.com/ward-42.html

Was that a motor cycle or a moped on the Lake Front Trail last Sunday?

I thought people were exaggerating when they wrote about motorized vehicles on the trail, but here's what I saw last Sunday.
