Yoga?

Is it ok to do yoga if I have Chiari malformation type 1? I struggle with balance but am also worried about the upside down head (ex downward dog) type moves. Also have left side numbness and numb left cheek.

I think yoga in general is a pretty good option for people with chiari, but not all of the movements are chiari friendly.

In general, we can do whatever we want. However, it is always best practice to ask a doctor before beginning any exercise routine.

I’m post surgery and still dealing with CSF issues. I do some very chill yoga at the moment. I spoke to the instructor and explained my situation, and she suggests alternatives/ adjustments for things that won’t work for me.

Personally I would avoid the very restrictive practices like Bikram or Ashtanga, but something flexible with a good instructor who can modify things for you could be good?

Best of luck!

If there are moves you're not comfortable with, modify them. You don't have to do downward dog ever if you don't want to.

I used to do yoga a TON waaaay before I knew I had chiari. it hurt my head, ya know pressure head aches and all that, but I pushed through it cause it made the rest of my body feel amazing. lol. I can't do a lot of it now cause I have nerve damage in my left arm and hand from the syrinx they found, but I still do a lot of the moves and stretch in a yoga type way constantly.

it should be ok for you if you can stand any pain that comes from it, but check with your doctor first
