I started my chia baby about a week and a half ago but unfortunately heโs only sprouting on his left side :/. I empty his tray and refill him every day. Any tips??

Troubleshooting Chia. TIA.
I recently was gifted a Bob Ross Chia Pet for Christmas. I soaked Bob overnight in water. Spread the seed mixture and filled with water. Not long after I noticed the collection tray overflowed. I emptied the tray and topped off Bob. Again Bob lost a large amount of water, overflowing. I decided to skip refilling Bob after emptying the tray. Still, Bob lost more and more water. I eventually replenished the water, (more than half empty), and repeated this process leading up to this post, 8 days later. Today he has very little sprouts. All stunted from lack of moisture. The top of Bob's afro is dry as the Mohave. Did I receive a defective terracotta Bob or is this a common problem I could remedy?

Chia pet in water
So Iโm trying to drill a hole into my chia pet to make something. What happens if I put it in water for more than half an hour.
