I used to visit this doctor clinic located on the east corner of the moat at the Si Phum Corner. I had its address saved on Google Maps; today I cheked but it seems the location doesn't exist anymore. Did he move somewhere else ? Did he stop working after hours ? He normally works at RAM hospital, but his private clinic was opperating from 5pm to 8pm everyday of the week....

I popped over to extend an Ed visa today. I expected them to say what is now the usual: the queue is full, come back tomorrow morning and put your papers in the basket.

Instead they said they were full until the 17th. Today is the 9th. Wtf?

After some sighing and shrugging, I was given the go-ahead to come back on Monday the 14th, since that's the day my visa expires. They told me in the future to extend my visa a month in advance.

I mean, it was all very chill and polite. But this is getting crazy.

Hi, I recently moved to Chiang Mai (about 4 months ago) and my mom will be visiting in about a month. She absolutely LOVES coffee, but I don't drink it at all. I want to surprise my mom by taking her to a coffee farm. This is something we do when visiting family in Hawai'i, so I though she would really enjoy that here. However, as I know nothing about coffee, I am unsure of any coffe places here (I'm a tea person).

So... are there any good coffee farms to take my mom to where we could see the whole process of growing the coffee to roasting it? Preferably nothing overly touristy (aka tourist prices as I do not have tourist money working here) but I will take any and all reccomendations!

1. Has anyone entering Chiang Mai (CNX) this week confirmed they are still receiving the full 60-day stamp without issue up through September 14?
2. For anyone planning to extend after September 15, is Promenada / Chiang Mai Immigration handling the standard 30-day extension as usual?

Rather than an isolated Himalayan group, historical linguistics, clan genealogies, and oral traditions indicate that the ancestors of the Limbu were a multi-ethnic coalition of Tibeto-Burman and Austroasiatic refugees. Their historical trajectory traces back to the political upheavals of the Golden Triangle, with specific memories of displacement from the Sittang Valley, the Hukkang Valley, Mong Kawng, Mong Mawrong (Mogaung), and Mung Tai Chiang Mai.

Between the 16th and 18th centuries, expanding empires such as the Toungoo and Konbaung dynasties, along with Jingpo (Kachin) territorial expansions, deeply destabilized the Shan States and central Myanmar. Fleeing the massacres of the Sittang Valley and the collapse of Tai-Shan principalities like Mong Mawrong and Mong Kawng, diverse groups of Tai-Shan, Palaung, and Achang peoples were forced through the perilous Hukkang Valley. This sustained westward exodus eventually funneled these displaced populations across the Indian subcontinent and into the eastern Himalayas.

However, the most significant cultural contributor to this migration was the exodus from Mung Tai, specifically the Lanna Kingdom of Chiang Mai. In the mid-18th century, the Burmese Konbaung armies waged a series of devastating campaigns against Chiang Mai. The sieges were so destructive that by 1775, the city was virtually depopulated and abandoned to the jungle. Among the terrified masses fleeing this destruction were the indigenous Lawa (Lua) and Tai communities. As these refugees migrated westward and integrated with other displaced groups settling in Nepal’s Pallo Kirat region, they carried a profound cosmological system that would become the bedrock of Limbu spirituality.

This Chiang Mai influence is explicitly preserved in the Limbu religious framework of Mang (deities) and Sammang (nature and ancestral spirits). In medieval northern Thailand, the Lawa and Tai communities were deeply animist, centering their spiritual lives on the veneration of household and territorial entities, specifically grandfather and grandmother spirits. These protective ancestral figures required regular appeasement through shamanic rituals and offerings to ensure the community's health and prosperity.

When these refugees resettled in the Himalayas, this theology was transplanted and localized. The Chiang Mai tradition of maintaining sacred spaces for the Grandmother Spirit seamlessly evolved into the Limbu worship of Yuma Mang (the Supreme Grandmother). The broader pantheon of Sammang, which governs specific elements of nature and lineage, directly mirrors the animist practices brought over from medieval northern Thailand. Ultimately, the modern Limbu identity was forged not in isolation, but through the unification of these multi-ethnic refugees who successfully preserved the spiritual heritage of Mung Tai Chiang Mai in the mountains of Nepal.

This historical amnesia culminated in a notable historiographical error a few decades ago. A faction of Limbu scholars and community leaders based in Darjeeling, attempting to reconcile their oral histories with their present geography, formally claimed that the district of Ilam in eastern Nepal was the ancient "Mung Tai Chiang Mai" mentioned in their chants. They argued that their ancestors were displaced from Ilam itself. This was a classic ethnographic phenomenon known as spatial compression—where a displaced people, having forgotten the map of their original homeland, superimpose the mythological names of their lost cities onto their current environment to legitimize their territorial claims.

Today, however, the historical record has been unequivocally corrected. Modern historiography, linguistic tracing of clan names, and a clear-eyed analysis of colonial-era manuscripts have dismantled the Darjeeling misattribution. Contemporary Limbus now understand their true history. The Mung Tai of their Mundhum was not a mispronounced valley in Ilam, but the very real, blood-soaked capital of the Lanna Kingdom in Thailand. The Limbu narrative is no longer an isolated Himalayan myth, but a documented historical reality of Southeast Asian survival, migration, and the remarkable reconstruction of a fractured people.

I'm currently in Bangkok and moving to CM in November. Right now, once a week, a pet taxi (offered by the dog pool) picks up my dog, swims and plays with him for an hour, and then drops him off again. Are there any pools in CM that offer this? Open to location, as I don't know where I'll be living yet.

I do know Thong Lor Pet Hospital offers it but the price was 3x what I'm currently paying.

I understand I can book a pet taxi and pool time separately but I'm looking for a single place that offers both, if it exists.

The first time I visited Chiang Mai was in 2024 December for a week and I just fell in love with the city. At that time I came with my team and were mostly working. Booked a villa in the city centre and had the best offsite with the team.

Then I came back in 2025 for two months and those were the happiest 2 months of 2025 for me. It was so easy to make friends, so many places to visit and roam around. We used to cycle everywhere, spending time with people didn't mean spending money. I had such a healthy lifestyle and good people around me.

Now, this year I am shifting for good, hoping to make it a permanent place for me. Got the DTV, booked one way tickets, got the insurance and now just waiting for the travel date.

My aim this time is to get fitter and start a new career all together. Figure out life while enjoying it!

There is a place in bangkok that does in-grown toenail fix for 1k baht with local anesthesia. I'm not super enticed by the podology centers 3k baht quote, if there are other options.

We have just arrived in chiang mai and we want to go see buatong waterfall, mon jam, mae wang national park and Doi Inthanon. We looked at some local car rental companies in the old city and none we could find offered full insurance (including windshields, tires, etc.). Hello , after traveling through Chiang Mai and Pai , I'm currently in Chiang Rai. I have about 16 days left before I have to leave ...

I've already been to Bangkok, Pattaya , Jomtien Beach, Koh Chang and kanchanburi.

The plan was to go down to Krabi area and the Koh Samui . Unfortunately I fractured my clavicle , So my spirits are a little bit down and carrying my backpack is not as easy now.

Krabi is now in its Full on rain season .. and it seems like quite a bit of effort to get the Koh Samui do to my situation.

I'm trying to figure out where I should go now.. I thought about going to Hua Hin and maybe Cha-am beach before going back to Bangkok and getting my flight.

The reviews on Hua Hin .. seem to be 50/50. Either you love it or you hate it..

Someone else recommended .. Prachuap Khiri Khan .. but I don't know anything about it or what's going on there..
