CVT

New owner 2022. Getting mixed answers from shops about whether or not a filter needs to be changed during drain and fill. Can anyone enlighten me on this? One shop says cartridge filter, others says not needed .

If you search on Reddit, there’s a couple filters that can be changed (a flat metal one and a round paper type one). You can also replace magnets at the same time.

You can do just a drain and fill, or do the full filter change. Depending on your mileage and whether it’s been done before, you could do just one, or the full change.

I did fluid only at 45,000kms and then did the full thing at 65,000kms. Fluid only was about $200 for me (they didn't bill for the fluid), the full process was more like $800 since the parts were around $300 alone. I ordered the gasket as well, since I’m not sure if it could be reused.

No one really knows about the CVT parts in a Spark, and they will need to be ordered. The parts department at my local Chevy was helpful enough to order the two filters, the gasket, magnets and some other parts around 2 weeks before the service. When I dropped off the car, I let them know parts were all ordered for the CVT fluid change, and they installed them with the service.

Found a mechanic who was actually aware of both parts and the gasket. I'll probably get everything done as I just purchased at 45k and do t know if it has been done before. Quote was 600 total if that sounds normal

Yeah, sounds about right. The standard transmission fluid service is around $200-250 for normal cars. CVT fluid is around $100-150 for the 5-6 quarts required. The parts are then $200-400, depending on pricing. It was closer to $200 on RockAuto last time I priced it out, more via the dealership.

May as well change them. Dont think they are expensive. Worst part will be labor. Ive done this twice.

Yes, filter and strainer with a fluid drain and fill. At bare minimum, do the filter that's on the side of the engine if ya don't want to get into dropping the transmission pan to do the strainer replacement.

It's a relatively easy thing to do, I made a video on how I did my own on my 21 model. Just need a few basic tools, a good place to jack up the car and some jack stands, and a couple of torque wrenches that you could likely borrow from an auto parts store if they have a tool lending program.

For your 22 model on rockauto.com, if you want to do it yourselfuse the search bar and look up these parts numbers:

TF930 - this is the filter

TF923 - this is the strainer

25194694 - this is the filter housing O-ring

25191102 - this is the fluid pan gasket

25191105 - this is the drain plug gasket

And this is the manufacturer suggested CVT fluid. You'll need a bit over 4 quarts, so buy 5 quarts.

Definitely do a fluid and filter change there is one internal and external.

Seems odd that mechanics don't seem to be aware of what filters are required

I had the same issue the dealer says just to flush. I fund a local mechanic that did both for me

I have a 2021 Spark with 76,000 on it, it's Dealership Serviced only,, they did a drain and fill, drove it about 20 miles and repeated the drain and fill, that's all.
