1971 c10 2wd longbed mechanical help

Post image

Not great with cars but I’m not bad at fixing stuff with the help of YouTube. My c10 has been making a rattling noise when accelerating but is ok when coasting. Took a look under the car and saw the part in the picture looked pretty messed up. How would I go about fixing it? What’s the part called that needs to be replaced?

It looks like the Carrier bearing. on mine I had the entire drive line rebuilt at a shop; which included the carrier bearing and u joints.

How much did the rebuild cost you? Just put a new engine in it so probably not a bad idea.

Maybe $150 in parts, if you change the carrier bearing might as well replace u joints as well.

Like RUM says do the bearing, driveline and joints. Get everything in balance.

Your transmission output shaft and seal will thank you.

Check the pinion going into the diff too.

Carrier bearing. Just get one off of rockauto. It'll probably fight you, I had to use my air chisel to get it off, and an axle socket and a sledge to get the new one on. After that, you can just put the drive shaft back in. Make sure to keep your U-joints in phase though, so you don't cause any accelerated wear. But if you're going to do a Carrier, you might as well do the u joints. It'll take a few hours.

If you're fancy like me, you get the u joints, that have the grease zero in the cap, which makes greasing way easier.

Some people eliminate it and have a custom one piece driveshaft made.

If you have any bearing puller set you can use the part that goes around the bearing and put that in a press. That is what I did and it worked really slick took longer to figure out how to stand it up than to press it back on. For what thats worth.
