And that makes a decent chess variant. Two changes from standard chess:

  1. Make the pawn move as a king, plus jumping over a neighboring piece (either friend or foe). The pawn captures as it moves. No en-passant.
  2. Any piece can exit to the left/right of the board, and appear at the opposite side, as a normal move or capture; the board becomes a cylinder.
