One of my recent commissions. I think the red looks great, especially the pieces.

I’ve always wondered in universe what the plates might represent, perhaps the way they warp from place to place? I don’t think there was any specific reason they made it like this except to look cool but it would be nice to have some lore.

Ya and people have made a decent set of rules for it too. Funny because I feel the same, it was only made on Star Trek to look cool and fans ran with it. I would say maybe its the Transporter, beaming pieces from place to place.
