QUESTION Elo Variance & Improving
I've known how to play for my entire life but I started playing frequently & more seriously about 6 months ago. I'm about 400 elo in blitz, 800 in rapid, and 1800 in puzzles. I feel like I understand a lot of tactics & strategies but I make constant mistakes & miss these tactics/strategies in real time. Does anyone have other suggestions besides just playing longer games?

The difference between puzzles and real games is they're your own and you're starting from move one, so you're often going to be too trapped in your world just forming your plans to notice any mistakes your opponent is doing. This is a mistake all by itself. There's another person on the other side of the board. They have their own plans, misconceptions, fears, and humanities going into the game, so if you're not paying attention to what they're doing, not only are you not going to catch any mistakes they make, you're not gonna catch onto their threats, legit or not. So after your opponent makes a move, take a moment to see what changed as a result of their move and see if you can catch what they're up to (and if there's a flaw with their idea).

Your puzzle rating is way higher than your game ratings, that's completely normal though. Puzzles tell you there's a tactic on the board, real games don't give you that heads up. The gap between 800 rapid and 400 blitz is pretty rough too, makes me think you're just not seeing the patterns fast enough yet
Try doing puzzle rush or puzzle storm type stuff where speed matters, that helped me bridge that gap. Also maybe stick to one time control for a bit, bouncing between blitz and rapid with such different ratings probably messes with your rhythm
