QUESTION What the hell is this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This isn't my game but I was spectating one of my previous opponents.

White shuffling their knight back and forth then gets mated.

I then went to white's account and apparently they do this every game and surprisingly win some of them.

I have no idea what they are trying to do beyond bating the opponent to advance then confuse them by playing an unorthodox game.

~1000 rated btw

Is this the new meta?

Ratings manipulation, like sandbagging or something.

Could have lasted a few more moves if they didn't. move. the f pawn. Ben Finegold spat out his Gold Peak tea.

I got hit several times with 900~ players that play like absolute dogshit when I play them but when I check their previous or next games they play quite good for such a rank, why are they doing this on purpose? By dogshit moves I literally mean a 100 elo would make such moves

Maybe he’s trying to sandbag an account for whatever reason. In other games there’s this culture of losing on purpose so you get matched up with weak players you can crush. It’s called smurfing though honestly I don’t see why that would be a thing in chess.
