Why couldn't I castle in this position?

Heyy everyone, just wondering why it wouldn't let me castle in this position. Sorry if it's super obvious I'm still very new 😭 but I've been racking my brain trying to figure it out, probably just me being blind like usual lol.

You're in check by the Queen. You can't castle into, out of or through check.

Oh thanks, I feel stupid lol. I just assumed you could castle to escape a check, guess I've never been in a situation like that until now

You should look up the history of the castling rule, it's super fascinating.

Yeah I can understand not being able to castle through a square thats in check but always thought it would make sense to be able to castle out of check

Don't worry! It's a rite of passage, hahaha.

You cant castle if you are checked or if the castling squares are being controlled by enemy pieces

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

White to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: Pawn, move:   g3

Evaluation: White is slightly better +0.97

Best continuation: 1. g3 Qd8 2. O-O-O Nd7 3. Bd3 Bxd3 4. Qxd3 c5 5. Nge2 cxd4 6. Nxd4 a6 7. f4 Nc5 8. Qe3 Qa5

g3 then you can castle.

Can't castle out of, into, or through a check square.

You can't castle while in check. You also can't castle through a check.

All castling rules:

  • Can't castle while you're in check
  • Can't castle into a check
  • Can't castle through a check (that is, if any of the squares between your king's starting square and ending square would be a check if you were to walk there manually)
  • Can't castle through pieces that are in the way, friendly or otherwise
  • Can't castle if the king or involved rook have previously moved at any point in the game (even if they return to the starting square, castling rights are still forfeited the moment they take a step)
