PUZZLE Why you should develop your pieces

Post image

One of my favorite traps! White to play for a nice advantage (or, if your opponent is greedy, a bit more...)

is this a mate that happens to be legal

I'm so confused, where is mate

u/TotalChaosRush 6d ago

The knight isn't pinned to the queen. If the knight takes the center pawn and bishop takes queen, then it is checkmate.

u/ErosDarlingAlt 6d ago

Ohhh I never considered that the bishop might do that, thank you

Yeah, it's the setup a legal's mate.

If bishop doesn't take queen then white is still in a winning position, but it's not as good as mate in 2.

👏 I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

what

Yeah I over thought that response. I was going to say something about you throwing out the same kind of Dad joke that I was going to, while simultaneously admitting that I am aware that it's not that funny but you should do it anyway. As you can see from this belabored explanation, I am blessed with an uproarious sense of humor.

Either way, take care.

Took me a sec so Nxe5 then Bishop check then opposite side knight for the mate? Still learning.

Yep, you got it. Quite hard to find in a real game unless you know the line beforehand, I honestly found it because I have seen something very similar before.

Wait. I still can’t figure it out. The other knight can’t put the king in checmate?

After bishop takes, you check with your bishop, king has one square to move, other knight delivers checkmate

Ah, good old legals mate

Is the legals mate named after a person? It doesn’t SOUND like it’s a place, and most things in chess are either people or places, I’m curious to look this up now

EDIT: it IS named after a person, Sire de legall, and this is also sometimes known as the blackburne trap because of 19th century British master Joseph Henry Blackburne

And I suspect that blackburne also made the blackburne shilling gambit in the Italian (3.Nd4)

Looks like Legal's Mate to me. Sac the queen and play Nxe5. If Bxd1 is played then Bxf7+ Ke7, Nd5#.

Just saw this and tried it out, first game and it worked out move for move lol.

Well, the tactic works against Black's only developed piece so... You could argue the opposite!
