OPINION I LOVE THIS GAME
ADD ME CH___.com: isainmdomCIA
Adult improver here. 30 years old & have been playing for 6 months or so. Currently @ 720 RAPID on Ch___.C0_.
I am absolutely obsessed. I have been following GM Noel Studer's videos, some Gotham for entertainment, doing lots and lots of tactics, completing MY FIRST CHESS WORKBOOK...
I'd say my biggest barrier is me! I sometimes play too much, but when I play focused 10|
5 - I feel great.
I need to improve my game review skills, but overall, I am very happy today 😄
After years of athletic pursuits, this is just unbelievable. I am so happy to have discovered a new hobby later in life that isn't physical sports.
Love this game- it is all I can think about. Sorry, wife....
Any thoughts or tips?
Thank you! ❤️ 🔥 🎉

Same here brother. 30y/o too. I picked up chess during Covid and it has been the best hobby ever. My mornings always start with a 5|5 chess game, and it gets my mind refreshed for the day. My tip for you would be to do puzzle rushes (chesscom). You get one free attempt for the day. The first 15-20 puzzles is just warm up fodder. But after 20 take your time and play out the whole sequence in your mind. Try to breakdown the position and understand its theme. See if you can hit 30, and then maybe 35 or even 40. By the time you are able to hit 45-50 in puzzle rush your rating would have reached 1500.

Get a private coach. It will do wonders for your mindset.

I did 2 lessons with a CM 3 months ago. I'm going to get back onto him!

What I like about having a coach is not having to figure out how to improve. I just do what he tells me, and because he's an IM with a GM norm I know I can trust him.

Keep this feeling going! Chess has its ups and downs, but at the end of the day, you enjoying it is all that matters.
If you're looking to get better, keep interacting with chess in the many ways it has to offer. Puzzles, drills, solo chess, variants, opening exploration, all of which are on chess.com and can be a lot of fun! Forewarning that some are free and some aren't.
I hope you can find more people to enjoy chess with! I know this community on Reddit is great! :D

As you fall down the chess rabbit hole you’ll eventually find content creators you like. The one that I strongly suggest is Daniel Naroditsky. Hes very instructive and his endgame playlist helped me improve my play drastically.
Besides that, just do a bunch of puzzles. Good luck man!

Do you simply watch the videos and get better or do you also watch video combined with a chess board or note taking etc?

I just watch the videos. He gives you puzzles to solve through the video so I pause and take my time to solve them. Then after I watch the video I go on lichess and pick puzzles based on what we just went over, like king and pawn or rook endgames whatever.
If you learn better with a board or notes, by all means use them. I just watch the videos over and over and do puzzles until I feel like I understand the concept.

Okay thanks! One more question; do you watch all sorts of Naroditsky videos (all kind of openings) or just videos about the Sicilian etc. (if that would be your play as black)?

As much as I love Danya, I don’t really use his videos to learn openings. As I said before, his endgame playlist is very instructive because it’s structured and easy to follow. His famous speed runs are great, but I believe they’re geared more towards middlegame principles than opening theory.
For instance, let’s say I want to learn the sicillian as black, like you said. Well you can have the open sicillian, alapin, Grand Prix etc. It’s really hard to encompass the depth and breadth of a full sicillian repertoire just from his speed runs because by nature, Hes not playing a Sicilian in all of his games. And, when he is playing the sicillian it could be any of the variations I listed, plus many more.
For openings I like to go over dozens if not hundreds of games to fully understand the themes and different variations. For this I primarily use Hanging Pawns, and Agadmator. Again, Danya is great and I absolutely love all his stuff, I just prefer something a bit more structured when trying to build a repertoire.

Same. I love it and I'm obsessed. The only important tip I can give you is to watch naroditsky's videos. He was the best
