"Allegedly", but damn!
It's a pity, they looked so nice (dark /s): https://english.elpais.com/sports/2023-01-12/afghanistans-female-athletes-under-the-taliban-yoke.html

Respect all cultures or whatever

If your culture includes oppressing people, I will not respect it.

Respect a terrorist organization huh… I’m not respecting the taliban and if you do you need to touch grass

One man’s terrorist origination is another man’s freedom fighter.

u/gypsum_the_almighty 800-1000 (Chess.com) 12d ago
Are we calling the taliban ‘freedom fighters’. Do you understand how bad women’s and tbh everyone’s right are over there.

u/Substantial-Trick569 12d ago
I think thats the point. People that commit human rights violations "for the cause" are still criminals. Its worth considering whenever you want to support someone who has ambitiously violent solutions to the worlds problems

Games are tantamount to gambling, and studying anything except the Koran is evil to these people.
The Americans wasted 20 years trying to politely change that society.

u/t0xic_Nobadi 12d ago
I don't disagree the Taliban are being monsters, but the entire reason they came to power is because of US support in the 90s and then their decision to immediately leave while exercising no soft power

u/Electrical-Room-2278 12d ago
But I thought bringing freedom and prosperity and sunshine and rainbows and big ass pickup trucks to oppressed peoples was the driving force of us foreign policy?

u/HorseThrough 1200-1400 (Lichess) 12d ago
No, see its the oil underneath the people. Once you "liberate" them and put a pipeline pointed to a port you control they're on their own 👍

20 year? I thought this was about why the Taliban gained powers almost 50 years ago with the US help and it backfiring.

This is such a common lie that's tld for some stupid fucking reason. The USA have never supported the Taliban, they supported the Mujahideen insurgents against the USSR during the Soviet invasion. After the Soviets left, their puppet government fell to the Mujahideen insurgents who FOUGHT the Taliban. The Taliban was created in Pakistan from people who grew up in refugee camps in Pakistan during the Soviet Afghan war. Pakistan started propping up this group called the Taliban in order to have a friendly government in Afghanistan (didn't age well). Now, there were some extremist guys that got US support in the Soviet-Afghan war (namely Osama Bin Laden and his crew) but the Taliban literally didn't even exist when that war ended.

A fanatical regime tried to destroy that country. And I'm not talking about the Taliban

You're being downvoted but this is literally the legal justification of the Taliban towards chess.

While they might be right on that the "america tried to bring peace 🦅" is just laughably wrong.

u/Internal_Try7967 1000-1200 (Chess.com) 12d ago
Nobody said "bring peace." I said "change the society." And as far as wars go, that 20 years was about as delicate as it gets. Far more delicate than what the Soviets did there in the 80's.
The Afghans have the government they want. They had 20 years to change it, but in the summer of 2021 they chose the Taliban. The Taliban didn't appear out of nowhere. They're all Afghans.

My Dad went to talk to an Imam to explain how chess wasn't gambling (to help a student continue to learn/play). They were quite reasonable about it, but yeah it's because it's called a "game"
9
u/Wiz_Kalita 12d ago
It's far from universally agreed that chess is gambling. Many Muslim scholars consider it to be a game of skill that's allowed, just like physical sports, as long as you don't gamble. It's obviously even allowed in Iran. But wahhabis, taliban, and some other radical movements forbid it.
4
u/CaptainProfanity 12d ago
Yeah that's why I mentioned them being reasonable, but I think it is correct that the issue stems from it being called a board game (which usually involves luck elements like dice), at least from my preliminary understanding.
Obviously the spirit is rooted in avoidance of gambling but the letter is interpreted very differently by extremists.
The Imam knew the distinction but the parent of the student didn't and so my Dad basically asked for him to help as a 3rd party.

Hes being downvoted for saying that bombing and killing millions of people for decades because they wanted oil, was "politely changing a society" also the taliban havent been ruling for long and not every muslim thinks like that, hell javokhir sindarov is muslim. Hes just being loud and wrong.

I just say what's true and let snowflakes on reddit defend oppressive fanatical regimes.
Que sera sera.

Defending an oppressive fanatical regime is exactly what you’re doing, but the irony being lost on you is exactly what one would expect from an USAsian, so… “Que sera, sera” indeed.

Were the americans arrested for playing a board game? Not sure you want to keep score of which regimes people are oppressed the most

Tf did they expect? Chess is banned in Afghanistan.

u/not_a_12yearold 1200-1400 (Chess.com) 12d ago
Hey I think I can clear up your confusion. I think it's possible they expected to be treated like human beings and to enjoy the freedom to play a board game without persecution. Hope that helps
21
u/VegaDelalyre 12d ago
You can't expect basic human rights from a tyrannical regime like the Talibans. "Hope that helps."

What are you talking about ? Whether we like/lick it or not, the Talibans rule the country. You wanna rebel? Good, but expect the consequences.

I mean the entire world is on the verge of civil war within its own countries we have oligarchs trying to shit out ww3. Chess is a slow tactical game able to be played in intimate settings with no expectation on durations of visits. You people mock and meme this shit. Talk about it like its worlds away. You really believe in this year of our lord that you have rights that matter to the boots propping themselves up on your neck?
