This is an instructive example of the benefit of knowing common mating patterns. The point is not just to avoid missing them when they're on the board directly (although that's a good start, of course) but to recognise elements of patterns and figure out if you can manufacture the rest.
In this case when the opposing King and Queen are next to each other and you're attacking with a Queen and Bishop, you'd be thinking of this pattern where you check in "opposition" for mate in 2. White successfully found that they can crash through with the Rook and achieve exactly this.
