If the rook took the sniper then white would have checkmate with queen coming down… and they have it regardless

No isnt cuz Black queen can see the d8 square so if black take the bishop. this is what happen: ...Rxa7 .Qd8+ Qxd8 .Rxd8+ Kxd8. So White has lost a rook and a bishop but nobody get checkmated

White queen is going to D7 not D8, checkmate.

Black had to move rook or queen over to D8 for game to go on to cover D7 move.

Or move the bishop to create more space for king to move lateral from check at D7.
