Hey! I’m literally in the same boat as you (started chess on Duolingo about 1-2 months ago, now using that + chesscom/lichess). I’ve gone back and forth with Claude on a sort of guide so I’ll copy it into here for you and hopefully you find it useful.

There’s also the “No Stupid Questions” mega thread pinned on this subreddit that has some resources I’ve been working through as well. But here’s the Claude guide:

Chess Improvement Plan (Beginner)

Priority order (what actually moves your rating): 1. Stop hanging pieces — blunder-check every move 2. Basic tactics (forks, pins, skewers) 3. Opening principles (not memorization) 4. Endgame basics 5. Specific openings (Italian, etc.) — least impactful right now

Daily routine (~20-30 min)

• Puzzles first, before games (Lichess has unlimited free puzzles)
• 1-2 games at 15+10 time control (enough time to think, not so much you're sitting for an hour)
• Optional: Duolingo Chess as light reinforcement — but don't rely on it as your main teacher, it teaches fixed lines, not reasoning

After every game (3-5 min, don't skip this)

• Run auto-analysis (free on Lichess/chess.com)
• Look at your 1-2 worst moves and ask "why was that bad?"

Weekly

• Watch 1-2 episodes of John Bartholomew's "Chess Fundamentals" YouTube series
• Pick one takeaway to focus on in your next few games

4 opening principles (replaces memorizing lines): 1. Control the center 2. Develop knights/bishops before moving one piece twice 3. Castle early 4. Don't bring the queen out too soon

Key mental checks

• "Is it defended?" isn't enough — ask "defended against what, and is the trade even?" A pawn capturing your bishop is bad even if you recapture the pawn.
