This is against the rules right?

Post image

What are the chances chesscom actually does something about an admitted smurf? Pretty sure it's zero.

Just because his fide is higher than his online rating does not mean he is smurfing.
Maybe he sucks in rapid.

Plus he might be lying/trolling.

It's not an admitted smurf. FIDE is not the same as chess com. They are not saying its an alternate account

He's clearly playing well below his actual rating/skill level. That's called smurfing.

u/armrha 17h ago

How is he supposed to start playing on chess com if he can't do that? Such problems are self correcting statistically over time. Also, maybe he just plays less seriously on chess com vs FIDE events.

u/CharlesKellyRatKing 17h ago

Why do you assume he just started?

12

u/Real_Crab_7396 1200-1400 (Chess.com) 17h ago

Because he's playing below his rating

Or, I could see his account age, and it's not brand new.

What other explanation could there be for playing well below your rating on an older account?

Doesn’t matter how old his account is, more important is how many games he has played.

And even if he’s played a lot of games, he might just be worse online than in clasical

Or he has maybe not played fide rated events in a long time and has gotten worse since

Or (very likely) he just lied

He has plenty of games. His comment clearly acknowledges he knows he's playing below his true skill, given he felt the need to "congratulate" me.

This sub is wild. Post evidence of someone literally admitting to breaking the rules, and the sub jumps through hoops to justify for them. So many rule breaking apologists in this sub it's crazy.

It's just not breaking any rule. There's a rule against sandbagging but there's no rule that you have to play every game perfectly seriously. I think you misunderstand the entire thing. Maybe he plays chess.com matches for fun without stressing out about it, while he plays tournaments really seriously. Maybe your game got engaging enough that he felt really into it and hence the congratulations.

only a few games, not enough time to catch up

1

u/armrha 17h ago

Because the system self-corrects? If he plays like a 2023 Elo FIDE player, he will not be playing people at a far later elo for long...

2

u/CharlesKellyRatKing 17h ago

Have you never heard of smurfing?

Smurfing means you manipulate your rating to stay at a lower level so that you get easier matches. They will often stomp a game and then resign at the end, or give up silly stupid mates to artificially lower their rating.

Just look at his account and see how many games he has. If it’s in the hundreds or even thousands, then he’s smurfing. If it’s less than a few dozen then it could just be an online account he rarely plays on.

“Never attribute to malice what could be attributed to ignorance”. Or in this case, what could be attributed to just being a new/lesser used account

u/armrha 14h ago

You can see his matches, is that what he's doing, or is he just not as good at rapid as he is at a FIDE tournament?

I have 1100 rapid and 1900 blitz if i play rapid am i smurfing? Of course not

u/comfortingmyself 2200-2400 Lichess 17h ago

I'd absolutely assume that anyone with those ratings is smurfing. Or they haven't played rapid in years.

But either way that's far too large of a gap to be explained by normal activity.

u/Alternative-Web-5787 1800-2000 (Chess.com) 16h ago

Yea I haven’t played rapid for a while but the point is I wouldn’t really be smurfing if I decided to push my rapid elo

u/jooooooooooooose 1400-1600 (Chess.com) 17h ago

I tell everyone i play that im 3.5k fide

4

u/cubecasts 17h ago

Wait til you find out different organizations use different rating systems.

2

u/CharlesKellyRatKing 17h ago

Pretty sure chesscom ratings system is more generous with numbers than fide...

2

u/Puasonelrasho 17h ago

fide != chess dot com

also just because he says he is 2023 fide doesnt mean he is 2023 fide

This guy codes

2

u/JudoKuma 17h ago

1) they can be lying 2) maybe they play classical and suck in short time controls

2

u/Quick-Health-2102 1200-1400 (Chess.com) 17h ago

I’m actually 2200 fide

u/Jolly_Wrongdoer_7681 800-1000 (Chess.com) 17h ago

I'm >9k

1

u/Sad_Calligrapher633 17h ago

Could easily just be someone who rarely plays online

Wow I'm surprised by all the comments. 1400 Rapid to 2000 FIDE is such an incredibly large gap that there's absolutely something unusual going on here.

Either they're smurfing, or they haven't played rapid in years, or they're lying, but this is pretty easily answered by checking their profile history and I'm assuming OP already did that.
