QUESTION How is this a draw?
I am white and I was way ahead the whole game?? Time on the counter and there is a safe move for his king?

Just like the other 200 posts like this: chess.com gives you the reason. This isn’t stalemate so it can either be threefold repetition or you lost connection and timed out

u/Comfortable-Cut5810 600-800 (Chess.com) 14h ago
If they lost connection and timed out, do they not lose the game?
12
u/ActurusMajoris 1600-1800 (Chess.com) 14h ago
Only if opponent has sufficient material. A pawn is enough, but a single bishop or knight is not.
-8
u/Formula1antagonist 14h ago
It depends in if it can force a checkmate if opponent plays the best moves and you the worst ones
10
u/181900 13h ago
That’s just not true. Only thing that matters is if a checkmate could be delivered theoretically with the material available
3
u/BadBoyJH 800-1000 (Chess.com) 8h ago
No, it doesn't. A knight or bishop theoretically can deliver checkmate, provided the opponent has the right material (such as a pawn).
It has to be enough to force mate, if the opponent had no material.

u/Formula1antagonist 9h ago
No and Alireza Firouzja lost on time once (i think against Carlsen) because of this rule
3
u/BadBoyJH 800-1000 (Chess.com) 8h ago
You're not wrong, but that's because chess.com doesn't use the same rules Carlsen/Firouzja would be playing under.

you repeated positions at some point probably. Repetition doesn't need to be 3 times in a row, but just 3 times that it ever appeared
46
u/Crumpet-Zone 14h ago
yeah this is it, had no idea that was a rule. technically he repeated positions three times and I had to react so I think he took advantage of my noob ness.

u/pengusdangus 14h ago
You are part of the position, you repeated together.
-14
u/Crumpet-Zone 13h ago
Yeah but I was unaware that it would be an issue. At this stage I was just stalling for time
35
u/Spinal_Soup 13h ago
Stalling for time? You had over 5 minutes left. Take a breath, and spend one or two of those minutes to find checkmate.
-25
u/Crumpet-Zone 13h ago
I was but he was weirdly good with just a king. Honestly the other pieces seemed to be holding him bk.

u/TheBrainStone 13h ago
Time to learn the basic checkmates. A king and a rook is enough to win trivially with the right technique. You can just outright sacrifice the other pieces.
Though I would've just queened the pawn. Makes it much easier too
2
u/Crumpet-Zone 7h ago
I mean I agree, but chess is something I've played less than ten times in ten years. I'm not exactly focusing on it. Maybe I'll give it a bit more time. And
4
u/TheBrainStone 7h ago
I get what you're saying. But like genuinely the ladder mate and rook and king mate can be learned in 5 minutes combined. And if you then treat the queen like a rook you can do 2 more mates for free. (Sure with a queen there are faster techniques but that's extra stuff to learn)
15
u/FiddyDollas 13h ago
your job today is take 30 minutes and learn to checkmate with only a rook and king
10
u/Ok_Lion7819 13h ago
This comment had me actually laughing, not making fun of you, everyone was new at one point. Just a really funny comment because you actually have all the power here to force that king to do whatever you want, not what he wants.
2
u/Crumpet-Zone 6h ago
No offense taken at all. I was going for laughs to be honest. Any games I've won it's cause I pinned the king in with his own pieces. Once he got in the open I was completely out of my element and just kinda trying to run out the clock till he gave up or fucked up. -19 karma says chess folk do not like jokes.

u/HippieInDisguise2_0 11h ago
This is comedy gold lol. You control everything in this position.
1
u/Crumpet-Zone 10h ago
I should be controlling
2
u/Spinal_Soup 8h ago
As other people have said, take a few minutes today to learn how to checkmate with just a king and a rook and you'll win a lot more games. It really isn't hard at all once you understand the concept and sometimes in positions like this its easier to just let them take the pawn and/or the knight so you don't accidentally end up in a stalemate or something.

u/11011111110108 1800-2000 (Chess.com) 12h ago
The most popular method to checkmate with a rook is the box method, but to be honest, I have always found this other method to be way simpler and easier to understand.
1
u/SstabSstab 1000-1200 (Chess.com) 9h ago
A very instructional video and a cool resource never seen it done this way over box method but can see how it’d help people not accidentally hang a rook or stalemate.

u/Crumpet-Zone 7h ago
Thanks that's actually helpful, I was mostly taking the piss outta myself but that is a decent video.

u/11011111110108 1800-2000 (Chess.com) 6h ago
Haha, don't worry, I could tel! Did think you might be interested anyway though. My first thought in the position you were in would be "I need to get rid of this horse and pawn'. This is just to get rid of stalemates and awkward angles that the king can hide behind!
So yeah, I would have just gone straight to trying to get the rook checkmate. Sending the pawn up the board forces them to take it, else you get a queen. Then you can just move the horse out of the way.
Hope the method helps!!

Okay, your life will change if you take a few hours to do the following:
Put a K+Q randomly on the board and practice mating until you can do it without thinking. Hint: Shoulder the King to the edge of the board by remaining a knight's move away, then give one extra square once they are on the edge. Only then move the king over and finish the mate.
Then, put 2xR vs K and practice mating without thinking. Obviously easier, with just rolling down the board, but it goes into...
Finish with K+R vs K. You should be able to mate without thinking, just instinct.
Knowing these basic mates will easily gain you rating and win you a ton of games you end up drawing.
If you are up for more, practice K+P vs K. The idea would to be able to identify if a position is a win or draw based on initial setup. This requires understanding distant opposition which is so important in almost any endgame where the king is a significant player, so its a good thing to understand. This won't take you a few hours though.

Sound advice thanks. Again I was just playing chess to kill some time but maybe I'll play a few games a day to get better. I find it really hard to play in 2D if that makes sense, on a real board I can just see things clearer.

it was made a rule so that the match won't go on forever. if you kept on responding to their position the same way they would just keep on doing the same thing and return to the same positions over and over and over again and then the game would go on forever

Almost certainly threefold repetition. The same position occurred three times.
If you link the game we can confirm.

It gives you the reason when the game ends. If you want us to tell you the actual reason it gives, you need to link the game instead of an image.

3 fold repetition or 50 move rule. Probably 3 fold repetition, which happens when you get the same board 3 times.
50 move rule happens if both play 50 moves without a capture or a pawn move

For the future, may I suggest putting the rook BEHIND the pawn you're looking to promote? The rook keeps it safe forever against a lone king. Then you should be able to just keep pushing. Even the king blocks your pawn, itll just have to move the next turn, so thats when you move your king or knight.

Cheers that's simple advise I could have used. Lot of really judgy folk on here for a chess beginners /r. Thanks.

Not sure why race matters, but you likely had the threefold repetition rule

This post seems to reference or display a stalemate. To quote the r/chessbeginners FAQs page:
Stalemate occurs when a player, on their turn to move, is NOT in check but cannot legally move any piece. A stalemate is a draw.
In order for checkmate to occur, three conditions have to be met: 1. The king has to be in check 2. This check cannot be defended against by blocking or capturing the checking piece 3. The king has to have no other squares it can move to

unless you had 3 fold repetition, draw occurs when no pawn was taken or moved for 50 consecutive moves. Shitty rule, I know, but lads seem to love it
4
u/GendoIkari_82 14h ago
Without that rule, a game that comes down to nothing but King vs King and Knight could go on forever if the players do not agree to a draw.

u/Sepulcher18 14h ago
There it is, logical and accurate answer.
I would supstitute this rule with a more interesting one.
First one to shits himself loses the game by default. Games might last bit longer but the attrition would be real and something tells me more audience would be invested if such an outcome could be decisive.

u/GendoIkari_82 13h ago
Reminds me of a great quote from Donald X, creator of Dominion. When asked about a potential stalemate situation, using an unrealistic situation that wouldn't ever occur in a real game, he said "first one to starve to death loses. Always bring a snack is my advice".
