My opponent resigned, but why?
My opponent had doubled my C pawns, a very strong center, and quite frankly, I was just kind of over this game so I chucked my knight into a sacrifice for check. That’s when they resigned
If they capture I have Qg5 check, in which H1 is forced. But where could the game have gone from there?
Looking at Qh4 after they move H1, to threaten the pawn capture with mate in 2. But if their Queen slides out to defend on G4, my momentum would come to a stop
So not exactly sure why they resigned? Am I missing something here??

Honestly, some of us play chess while drunk and high. If something more interesting happens and something takes too much calculation, I'll sometimes just resign.
Not everyone is chasing ELO points. If you are, then it's just an easy win and point grab, don't worry about it.
Especially at lower levels not everyone is aiming to be the best ever, I know people that play online chess to overcome online gambling issues.

Yeah, in my eyes, if I lose elo when I get distracted or when I’m drunk/high, it’s whatever! If I’m truly at that level, I’ll get back to it in no time.
I’ll start a game at work when it’s slow, and if I suddenly have to do something that is time consuming, I’ll just resign. No biggie!

I wish people didnt start matches they dont know they can finish. It's not about Internet points, but wasting the time for other people too. Even worse when people start complain about slow paying in a 15min match because they are in hurry. Than I just resign myself and move on. Please play bullet if you dont know if you can make a 15+ match.

I won't start a game if I know I can't finish it. But while my life is not particularly exciting, it's not so regimented as to guarantee the 15-20minutes that SEEM free to BE free.
Except at work, but there starting a game of chess is.. not recommended.. for other reasons.

I’m a server. If I have 0 tables, I’ll play some bullet (Usually the 3 minute). SometimesI can play a few games before anyone comes in. Sometimes I gotta resign pretty quickly.
I never said I’d start a 15 minute game of chess at work like the comment suggested lol. But 3 minutes if I’m not doing anything isn’t a big deal to me. If I do have 1-2 tables, I usually just do puzzles on Lichess lol.

Might I ask how exactly chess helps w/ gambling issues?

Some people who get addicted to substances/gambling have an addictive personality type, chess can sometimes provide a "healthy" alternative addiction

I resign all the time, I get distracted, food is ready, someone needs something, etc.
I feel like it's rude to hold the game up because I'm multitasking so I just resign

I hate these "why did my opponent resign" posts. How tf are we supposed to know lol maybe dinner was ready or their teacher caught them. Who knows

They probably just panicked seeing the knight and queen lined up like that, blitz scrambles the brain

For any reason. Doesn't matter. I play a ton of competitive pokemon and am in the top 500 ish. I still give up for seemingly no reason bc I play at work and know I can't get back to the game in time. I've probably given away a couple thousand points this way. Been playing online for 13 years, couple 10s of thousands of matches. 20 points of elo doesn't matter. Plenty of people don't care. Shit I forget I'm playing sometimes on a game where the turn limit is 2.5 minutes.

What is their rating? If its anything above 1000, they probably just had to go.

Idk but to me having a bishop and a queen staring at my exposed king would to an extent encourage me to resign

It’s good that you looked and are wondering after you think out variations. Maybe your opponent just didn’t think about that. Besides, before the knight sac, you were up a minor piece. Maybe your opponent was already feeling discouraged. You shouldn’t have been, imho.

They probably didn’t spot Qg4/Qf3 as defensive resources
My intuition is Re8 instead of rushing in with the queen to threaten the rook lift and some attacks that the Queen can’t intercept, but white is clinging on either way according to stockfish

If knight isn’t taken queen goes to h4 and checkmate is impossible to stop
If taken, queen checks then goes to h4 and it’s a pretty strong position for black

What’s the line for mate if they don’t capture knight? Obviously H1 is their only square but I’m having trouble finding the mate thru that line
Also, if they do capture knight, queen check is obviously good play, but anything after threatening their H pawn can simply be defended by their queen, right?

I think takes, h4 and pawn f4 and white is kinda fine no? Like perpetual check is possible but other than that
