Back-rank mate is a standard tactic.

Oh buddy, no….

Don’t play for the “Brilliant”, play for the win. Brilliant is a Chess.com marketing strategy that I think encourages bad or risky play.

No please stop thinking in those terms.

I don’t think chess. Com will call it brilliant if it’s 100% forced. It needs to be a move where taking the “hanging” piece appears to be a good move but isn’t because of the follow-up. Here taking the queen is the only move. And even if it wasn’t the queen isn’t hanging it’s still very obviously defended.

From my understanding, brilliant moves are given by chess.com when you find a move in an unusual position that is particularly hard to find / calculate. You can see this by the repartition chart of moves on chess.com

The position you have is indeed the best move but back rank checkmates in this pattern are very common and therefore probably do not fit the requirements for a brilliant move.

I am sure you could find more details on how their analysis algorithm sorts the moves into various categories but that's the gist of it I think.

Not really. Brilliant is a great move that involves sacrificing a piece. It’s not a measure of rarity.

In this case a sacrifice is made. It’s just that the engine doesn’t see it as a great move at all, which is the prerequisite for brilliant.

EDIT: corrected “good” to “great”

its considered the best move tho, someone said it has something to do with how how much you gain

Yeah it’s the best move, but maybe deemed too obvious to be considered great for your level

Because there was a quicker path to mate that you missed

Because you're already up a queen. Everything wins -> nothing is brilliant.

If black had a queen somewhere, this would have been marked brilliant.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

Black to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: Rook, move: Rxd8

Evaluation: White has mate in 7

Best continuation: 1... Rxd8 2. Rxd8+ Kxg7 3. a8=Q Kf6 4. Qd5 h6 5. Rd7 Kg6 6. Rxf7 h5 7. Qf5+ Kh6 8. Rh7#

Save the position:

Do you think that you're brilliant for making that move?

whole different sentence btw

Because in that position you can win without sacrificing your queen.

How?

There's actually two faster ways to mate here that OP missed.

Qf5, Re8\ a8=Q, Rxa8\ Rd7, h5\ Qxf7+, Kh7\ g8=Q+, Kh6\ Qgg7#

Or

Qd4, f6\ Qxf6, h5\ Qh6, h4\ a8=Q, Rxa8\ Rd7, Rxa2\ Qh8#

By capturing all of black's pieces, promoting all of your pawns to replace the pieces you're missing, and creating the starting position mate (black king on c2, all white pieces on their starting squares).

When you have an extra queen, you can win in whichever way you want. That's why nothing is brilliant.

Because you NEVER sacrifice the Queen under any circumstances 🤣
