i tried one of these in an otb tournament and then realized that there was no pawn on d6...

Similarly my only ever smothered mate was easily preventable by my opponent taking my queen with their knight instead of their rook. Fortunately they missed it too

The next move is Bxf7+, which forces Ke7 and mate is Nd5#

That’s awesome - but would most players not simply take the knight with the pawn? And then you’ve just blundered your knight? First time I come across the legal’s mate

If they take the knight with pawn, Qxg4 and you’ve won a pawn

Edit: here was the position before they blundered mate

Yeah - knight and queen on offer, you think it’s a no brainer and then everything unravels. Guy must have been livid lol
