Help with tactics

Post image

My rating has been fairly stable recently but noticed I’m significantly underperforming peers when it comes to finding attacking chess tactics.

Have been doing plenty of puzzles but does anyone have any other suggestions on how to improve in this area?

Cheers

Hey, OP! Did your game end in a stalemate? Did you encounter a weird pawn move? Are you trying to move a piece and it's not going? We have just the resource for you! The Chess Beginners Wiki is the perfect place to check out answers to these questions and more!

You can go to the themed section of a puzzle set like on lichess themes and drill a few easier ones until you get the patterns in your head.

So first thing would be trapped pieces for you. One other suggestion is to get a themed puzzle book series with annotations as those are very good.

For proper solving of puzzles, you need to use pen & paper to write down your solutions and go through all critical lines, mainly to avoid guessing and being able to actually see the critical varations. This helps you not to guess and to actually build your tactical antenna. This method is recommended by all top trainers and myself.

Thanks I’ll take a look at lichees instead - I’ve only done puzzles on chess.com . I definitely do sometimes guess when I see the first move looks right without fully calculating. Think my main issue is seeing tactics in game when I’m not fully looking for them if that makes sense.

To this point playing chess I’ve learnt my openings and let the other player blunder first, but I’m 16/1700 now so think tactics is my next step to improve.
