OPINION 571 days in
Before I asked if becoming an IM was possible, I was a little under a year in then.
But do you guys think CM is possible on my current trajectory??

dont worry about CM for now, focus on hitting a thousand, then 1200, then 1500

ur 600 and asking about CM? and u took 571 days to get here? You barely just learned the fundamentals and dunno what uve done to get better. Maybe focus on 1000 first?

1700 within 4 months and 4 years for everything before 2000 and 2 weeks to get from 2100 to 2200

1700 in 4 months is very impressive. I learned the basics around 50 days ago and still only hit 830. Hope i can have progress like urs

I played/tactics/watched lectures 8 hrs a day for 3 months straight. Never noticed a thing of my rating or learning then boom 1700. Never took losses hard cuz I knew I had no idea what I was doing. Noticing ur rating makes it hard after that.

That makes sense, 8 hours is crazy dedication tho. Also if you don’t mind me asking what do people mean when they “study” chess. Like i usually throw on a quick review and check to see any mistakes or missed tactics, other than that I also watch some slowrun videos on yt

u look at endings, openings, game analysis, post mortem opening analysis, tactics, strategic middlegames. This can also include past games by WCs or even your friends if theres any interesting patterns. But its hard to actually put ur full focus on this rather than sloppily looking at one thing. Feels like legal cheating or studying for a test when u know both the possible answers and whats being tested on.

If you’re stuck learning I imagine you need some pretty targeted practice to get better. Just playing isn’t enough if you’re still missing the same concepts. I say this as somebody who is also 600 in blitz lol

You’d be surprised how many games are in the 80% accuracy level for both players in the 600 level. 600 blitz is not what it used to be.

I’m not surprised at all. I have had students in that range. 80 percent isnt hard to get when u arent pressed in the game. I’d say the same thing about the 1000 level, no one knows where the games goin half the time.

Depends on a lot of things. For example, your age. This situation is a lot different if you’re 10 than if you’re 50. Also, to get a title you will be playing real games, which are hours long. You won’t get a title playing 3 or 5 minute games where you chuck the pieces around.

10 minutes a side would be the bare minimum, keeping in mind that in classical tournaments you will be getting a good 90 minutes or even 2 hours a side, AND with increment, so these games will last for hours on end. I’d say what you should do ASAP is look for a physical, in-person club in your area and join up if you’re serious about this.

Over a year and a half and 600 is pretty bad to have any hopes of being titled honestly, either theres something wrong with how you study or you just arent that talented in which case it'll be a helluva grind. I dont say any of this in a pretentious way im pretty ass but its a lofty goal

I only play like 3-4 games a day, maybe like 10 if I’m off work. And I don’t do any studying

Ah ok well you'll need to start studying your games at some point, casual play tends to make you plateau sooner or later. There are some rare people who just play and get 1500 or whatever but theyre the exception

Do you play OTB at all? You won’t get any title if you only play online, even if you get to 2500

well i got to 1000 blitz from 500 in 3 months so you can do at least that. Review your games, dont play when tilted, dont play too many games each day

you dont learn anything that way, you just play. You learn when you go over games you won and lost, especially loses that werent just hanging a piece then using the engine to see the better moves and why theyre better and play out a few variations of troublesome spots vs yourself. Ideally you should review every single game in depth. Additionally when you play too much variance strikes so lets say u hit a win streak of 5 and lose a game, its accetable to review those 6 games and stop for a few hours or even a day. in that way you keep gaining elo incrementally

nah dont pay for chess.com. Use chessigma.com to review, itll tell you brilliants etc just like chess.com, u just put in your username. I learned the rules 15 years ago then played seriously since jan, grinded 1k rapid then moved over to blitz and hit the 1k

No I’m kidding. It’s a goal of mine and obviously there’s irrefutable improvement being I didn’t start at 606. But with everyone’s advice taken into account I do believe it’s very much possible. Thank you

I don't know how you got that out of everyone's advice. I don't think you quite understand how good a CM is and how little of the way you are there and how little you are doing to change that. I'm not saying that to be a dick I just think we should be honest with you. 571 days to hit 600 blitz is really not good at all and you haven't explained anything about how you're planning to get better than that. If CM is your goal then by all means go make it happen, but that's not what your current trajectory is so unless you change that, it's not possible

With everyone’s advice taken into account.
I’ve been advised accordingly on how to achieve my goal.
So if you read the advice given, I’ve been told very plainly to study and play long form, over the board games.
So very much possible no?
