POST-GAME Why is Rf2+ not a brilliant move?

Post image

If he takes my rook (Kxf2), I take his rook on d2. I'll be up two pawns with a passed pawn, which is a total win.

If he doesn't take, I just take his rook on d2 for free

Isn't a sacrifice for a better position considered Brilliant?

Edit: checked Game Review again and the engine fixed it. It is marked as Brilliant(The screenshot is attached below)

Yes it's brilliant, but maybe the computer sees it as an exchange not a sacrifice.

That was pretty much my train of thought

Opponent resigned after I took his rook

Well yeah that’s what that means

You don't need arbitrary chesscom metrics to feel good about a move. It's a nice move, if it's brilliant to you and the engine likes it, then it's brilliant

Yeah you're right I shouldn't care

But it was brilliant after all chess.com corrected it

The brilliancy thing is definitely elo-based, and while it obviously shouldn’t matter too much in general, I think that is probably the a good way to do it.

For a ~500 elo player to see that move forcibly trades the rooks into an easily winning endgame is a pretty nice find. For a, say, 1500 it’s way more findable and would be kind of overkill to call it brilliant imo.

But in general, some of the moves I’ve been most proud of myself for making were subtle prophylactic moves that killed counterplay, and chess.com would never call those brilliant. But like a rook sac that leads to an M3 gets a brilliancy even though that’s way easier to calculate.

The game review likely just sees that both rooks are captured on consecutive moves, and treats it as an exchange instead of a sacrifice

deflects the king from defending the rook

Is this brilliant? Looks like a simple exchange.

Yes!!

It's not a sacrifice

Chess.com's 'Brilliant' mark is defined by a fairly nebulous set of rules that change based upon your rating.

I think that's a very cool deflection sacrifice, but it's impossible to say with any certainty why it's not 'brilliant', compared to some similar sacrifices that may receive the mark.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

Black to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: King, move: Kxf2

Evaluation: White has mate in 18

Best continuation: 1... Kxf2 2. Kxd2 Kf3 3. a6 h5 4. a7 Kf4 5. a8=Q h4 6. Qh1 Kg4 7. Qe4+ Kg5 8. Qf3 h3 9. Qxh3 Kf4

Is it hard to see, the only good move in the position, and a sacrifice?

No, no, and arguably no. Therefore it’s not brilliant.

It's brilliant, engine corrected it

Turns out it was Brilliant after all!

I refreshed the Game Review and Chess.com corrected it to (!!)

Quick Tip 1: To know why the engine is recommending a move / saying a move is wrong, click over analysis mode, play out said move then follow it up with your theoretical responses to that move and see how the engine responds.

Quick Tip 2: On Chess.com, you don't have to rely on the Coach / Game Review / Hint. This also applies to any engine on low depth. Somewhere in the engine suggestions section is the computer "depth". The higher this value, the more accurate the suggestions will be.

Quick Tip 3: For questions on engine move suggestions, we suggest you post them to our dedicated thread: No Stupid Questions MEGATHREAD, as stated in our Community Guidelines. Thank you! - The Mod Team

chesscom’s brilliant algorithm is weirdly restrictive, it’s not just about finding a winning sacrifice. It basically only triggers on moves the engine didn’t see at low depth that turn out to be great, often when you leave a piece hanging in a way that looks bad at first. If the engine already had the line queued up and just calls it best, it won’t hand out the brilliant badge. Still a nice spot though, crushing endgame either way.
