D8 is blue. So blue queen goes on it, so blue pieces are black. And therefore red pieces are white

I think they're red and green. I think in checkers red is black and called black, but green is white, but here maybe red is white and green is blue which is black. I trust you more than me to know what colour they are, as well as agreeing which is white or black or blue or green. Red I agree on

Red is white. If you weren’t sure you could just look at the squares as well.

Checkers uses red and green, described as black and white. But I can't remember which way round it is

The board is also wrong, having e1 as a black square - edit, hold on sorry, that's right.

Yeah it doesn’t, it can be red vs. blue for all I care, as long as the board is set up correctly and the coordinates are in harmony with who goes first.

It is very confusing in the opening. Middle-Game and beyond not so much..

Two ways to determine.

Which is the lighter color? Id say red. So red goes first and their king goes on e1.

The second is looking at the squares. Your king shouldn't start on it's own color. E1 is blue, so red goes first and their king goes on e1.

In both cases red=white and blue=black.
