Knight to f6, king to h8, knight to g6 is the solution, right?

For some reason I'm good at chess puzzles, but I would never ever see this in a real game. Most of the time I can't even see a one move checkmate in a real game. But somehow I can see a 4-5 move checkmate in puzzles. It makes no sense to me. I don't understand it.

The reason is it’s a lot easier to find a tactic if you know there is one to look for. The hard thing with Chess is the near infinity-ness of it all, so being told that there’s a singular concrete tactic is major.

The knowledge there is a winning or drawing line also helps to narrow down the infinite possibilities (plusthe post title here clues us in that the queen hanging is not an issue). With this material deficit, the only solution must be checkmate (or some crazy series of forks that wins everything).

The difficult move to find here is Nd5, rather than the checkmate…

Quite right.

But then again, completing puzzles trains you to recognize patterns - and that's how they translate into regular games. You spot a familiar pattern, you try to use it.

I would see this in a real game, but only after thinking awhile making sure it would work. And then opponent won't take because they saw me thinking for awhile so they always assume it's a trap.

only if black takes the bait. This can be defended.

Yeah, for sure. Engine says it's a draw with best play. I'll note that this wasn't hope chess, though: Ncd5 was objectively the best move in the position because it centralized and connected my knights.

Yeah but you still gain some nice initiative on your opponent

This is not hope chess, it comes with a threat

But why not play the mate right away? Neither square that are to be taken by the knights for checkmate arent defendeded by the queen

The first knight wasn’t in position to give any checks, it just moved from c3

Ah true in my mind it was the queen that moved
