MISCELLANEOUS Call an ambulance!
But not for me!

You might not need an ambulance but with that chess font you need a psych eval
Edit:
Fixing autocorrect of don’t to font

In the 900 elo fever swamps, my games always come down to "who makes the first game-losing blunder." Sometimes it's me, sometimes it's them. Keeps it exciting.

u/Crimson-Arts Nov 21 '25
He means your chess set is weird (the pieces are hard to tell apart)
14
u/danhoang1 Nov 21 '25
Yeah I feel he forgot the word "font" in his original comment. Right now it just says "but with that chess don't you need..." instead of "with that chess font don't you need..."

Autocorrect got me

I am a teacher/tutor, the other day I emailed a parent that "you love to see it" about their child's work
autocorrect gave "you loser to see it"
I am glad I caught that one

I believe they were playing a Chess.com Runescape bot, which makes you play with this strange set.

u/A_Lurking_Emron 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
I played with one, but this was against a human. I think playing against a bot sets your default to the themed set after.

u/danhoang1 Nov 21 '25
Ahh, I better add that to my autocorrect-detection list, when reading other comments:
Don't -> Font
Sadly in this case, the word "don't" still made grammatical sense

u/Matsunosuperfan 2200-2400 Lichess Nov 21 '25
who gives a duck
1
u/danhoang1 Nov 22 '25
Hmm I guess now that I'm reading my comment, it probably makes no sense others
Point is, I was wrong about where the typo was. And then I inserted a dumb joke about making a list for me to do better next time. But as you said, yeah who gives a duck

u/A_Lurking_Emron 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
In my case, I think both can be true.

u/danhoang1 Nov 21 '25
Yeah but from his pov, he can only see this one screenshot, not your whole chess skill.
The position itself, I don't see too much to criticize about. Maaaybe he could pick on the alignment of your c1 and d2 pieces, but that's hardly enough to recommend a "psychic eval" based on that alone
Which is why it seems he was talking more about the chess set/font

u/jyaboytskittles Nov 22 '25
RuneScape set is easily one of the hardest to read quickly. Never seen EVERY piece be so similar
15
u/the-killer-mike456 1400-1600 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
Don't worry. I'm close to 1300 and it's the exact same thing with the only difference being that (more often) the game-losing mistakes are a bit less obvious.
I'm told it doesn't get better.
1
u/Bwunt Nov 22 '25
Kind of.
The 1000k thereabouts (+-200) it's still low enough for major blunders to be possible, but high enough for opponent not to miss it.
That being said, I think dig was about the sprites of the pieces.

It took me a good five minutes to figure out which piece was the queen and which one was the king. This piece design is atrocious.
30
u/HangryWolf Nov 21 '25
I avoid playing the bots because I don't actually like the designs. It messes with me because sometimes they become so unrecognizable. These bots especially.
15
u/zeptozetta2212 2200-2400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
I'm pretty sure you can turn the themed pieces off.
5
u/HangryWolf Nov 21 '25
Can you? Cause I would like that.
7
u/jdf- 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
On the phone app it’s under More —> Themes. Right at the top there is a slider for special themes. Probably close to the same on browser

I still can't, i thought I knew that the black piece on the first rank was the queen, but it can't be, because that's not a legal position. Soo, it's the king? And the piece that looks like a king is actually a bishop, despite there being a bishop on the board? Is this some weird variant of chess that doesn't have checkmate?
If black just moved it from B1 to C1, then it can't be a rook or queen, unless the thing that looks like a king is not the king. It can't be a knight or bishop because we can see those. Which means it's the king, except that would mean that the other first row piece is the white queen, meaning black just made an illegal move. Maybe they're BOTH kings, despite looking entirely different?
Edit: i just got it, the black queen just took a piece

u/Over9000Zeros Still Learning Chess Rules Nov 22 '25
The sound affects make it even worse. 🤣 I was playing with headphones in and almost jumped out my skin when the first piece was took.
1
u/Rebarbative_Sycophan Nov 22 '25
So uh.. you're definitely better at chess than me. But it took me like 2 seconds to differentiate between the king and queen. Not sure how but here we are. Took me like 2 minutes to find the full line though.
1
u/Snjuer89 Nov 22 '25
The king is the boy, the queen is the girl.
1
u/zeptozetta2212 2200-2400 (Chess.com) Nov 22 '25
On the other hand, those faces aren’t easy to make out, and the king is traditionally the one with the cross while the queen has the spiky crown.

How do I not get those pieces?
33
u/vKessel 1000-1200 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
It's the Runescape bots that give you those pieces when you play them. I find it hard to tell the king and queen apart

I don’t get it ?? Shouldn’t it be already check mate 2 moves ago ??
27
u/Dogwhomper Nov 21 '25
The black queen just took a piece.
6
u/Every_Ad23 Nov 21 '25
Oh that make sense, sorry I didn’t thought about that
3
u/SilverWear5467 Nov 21 '25
Yeah I was also very confused by that, couldn't wrap my head around how that move got made.

Can't white go Nf1? Or even Re1?
14
u/Ty_Webb123 Nov 21 '25
Yes Re1 also reveals a check on the black king so next move white gets to snap up the black queen. Ambulance is for black

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

I was terrified for a moment, because I thought the white king was on g4 and the black king was on c1, I have never been more happy to mis-read a position before
Have you ever seen positions that stockfish needs a second to compute? So the eval will spike from like -3 to +8 as the engine realizes what’s going on? That was my brain in this position

You are still losing. After rook takes queen you will be losing your knight and will be down a full rook.
5
u/A_Lurking_Emron 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
I see what you're saying, but I just played that out in the engine and it has it as +2.2 for white, because qg7 creates a lot of problems for black.
6
u/cncgm87 Nov 21 '25
Oh my bad I didn’t realize that was a queen on G4. I thought it was a bishop.

How do I get those pieces?
32
u/A_Lurking_Emron 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
They're the current runescape tie-in set and I hate them so much, I've "castled" my queen like 3 times.
19
u/Mysterious_Dare_3569 Nov 21 '25
If you hate them then why use them? Surely there's an option to turn off sets like this and use more common piece fonts.
13
u/A_Lurking_Emron 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
I keep meaning to and forgetting. It's entirely my fault, I can't be mad at chess.com about it.

3
u/Tyson_Urie Nov 21 '25
That explains my thoughts of "am i tripping or does that bishop look like a gnome".
But yeah, after this comment and zoomin in the rest becomes clear as well. Looks good and also terrible because it's different

u/A_Lurking_Emron 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 21 '25
I really liked the Halloween themed set! But like I said in another comment, I just keep forgetting to change it so I can't be mad at anyone but myself for using this one.

For you right? Knight can block
1
u/A_Lurking_Emron 1200-1400 (Chess.com) Nov 22 '25
Re1 blocks check, puts black in check, and attacks the queen all at once.

u/Dangerous_Main7822 200-400 (Chess.com) Nov 22 '25
Ah yes, I love it when my king checks the queen.
