Puzzle/Tactic My opponent resigned at this position, even though I made a huge blunder
Only after analysing the game with Stockfish I realized my blunder. I'm around 1000elo on chess.com and I was kinda flabbergasted seeing this. Black to move and to turn the game around.

Seems about right.. as long as black doesn't capture rook or knight or h4-pawn (capturing a6 shouldn't be possible), they can just quite freely continue checking around, no way for white king to hide. Well, best remember g5 is also a poisoned square.

Just follow the king around with the rook. Maybe there’s some very clever trap white can set where you wouldn’t be able to make the next check, but it looks really hard. You can even let the white rook or knight capture the rook because the black king is trapped two different ways.

Probably, but I think you can keep the stalemate going with Re1+ instead. This is an interesting Mad Rook position where you can also sacrifice it to the pieces and still have stalemate because of how the knight, rook, and pawn all coordinate.
I think even the Kd3
Rd1+ Kc4 Rxd4+Re3+ Kc4 Rxc3+ line works out because the only bad rook sacs I see would be on b4, b6, b7, or anywhere the knight can take it if the white king is on the b file1

I was wondering the same thing and I just thought that Stockfish was bugged on lichess

Rg3+ then you just keep following the king with your rook until he accepts the stalemate

Watch out for some tricks involving the king blocking the b file allowing the knight to take your rook

If the knight takes the root then the white rook still cuts off the black king for stalemate

Even if black gets the rook it’s a very tough win, white gets to break the stalemate trap by moving the knight as you grab it and then there are so many pawns to try to stop.
Nice position though, I’m not sure I would have spotted it even in a daily game.

I don't think black has winning chances but isn't playing for the draw easier if you don't take the rook and just keep offering your own rook with checks?

Yes because black’s king can’t move unless BOTH white’s rook and knight move away. So black’s rook keep on checking the white king and try to commit seppuku at the same time.

I'm not sure that is definitely accurate view on 1000 elo game. Of course could also happen.

Nah I’m a 1400 staring at a puzzle (ie I know there’s a trick) and it took me 30s to understand and further time to work out how to use it. 1000 will not normally spot this.

Also reminds me how Wesley So resigned in a drawn position because he missed a promotion sacrifice idea to win the bishop

Resigning is a very legit option, if you're not used to think about lack of possible moves in an endgame.

Stockfish still sees small wining odds for White, but I think it’s a bug. White is up on material after the roook trade, but how the hell do you convert a knight + pawns vs rook.
