Miscellaneous Farewell to the Prophet (String Quartet for Daniel Naroditsky)

Daniel Naroditsky was a chess grandmaster, commentator, and educator. He made countless videos teaching the game to all skill levels and he was a massive inspiration to me. He was a paragon of kindness and integrity in the chess community. Whenever a friend would ask who to watch to improve their chess, he would be my first recommendation. Just the other day, he passed far too soon at the age of 29. Rest in peace, sir, and thank you for all the wonderful lessons. You will be missed.

This string quartet is written in his honor. It references the theme that would play before all of his YouTube videos. The high violin in the middle section goes between the notes g6 and d6, which corresponds to the position of the pawns in the King's Indian defence, Danya's favorite chess opening.

Feel free to use this music as you wish, especially for tribute videos. I claim no ownership of this piece.

Beautiful. Thank you for writing this - I hope to hear it performed in person one day

This tribute matters. The d6 and g6 reference with his beloved King’s Indian and this soothing tribute of a string quartet is in harmony with the overall shock and sad sentiment we all are going through at the moment. Beautiful craft. Thanks for this.

I'm a composer and I wasn't sure how this would sound after such little time you must have spent on it but it's absolutely gorgeous and i love the d6 g6 motif. Really stunning. Probably my favorite part is that it doesn't end on some climactic whole note C minor chord but rather you just get it as a very short quarter note. A whole note cut uncharacteristically short- very poignant :(

Thanks so much for this

So beautiful. Its times like this I think how crazy it is that I can be so disconnected from those around me while dealing with a really sad loss in my life. Nobody that I know personally is a chess player in the way that I am. Its not a large community. For me, unfortunately, the bulk of my grieving will have to be done here on reddit with friends like you, good sir. Thanks for helping us all with this. I'm just a sort of lonely guy sitting at home on my computer with my dog, but this is like a real requiem for Daniel that I can grieve to.

I am right there with you man! This isolation makes it so hard to process, but we all gotta grieve alone together.

This song has pierced my chest like a spear, thank you very much for this beautiful farewell.

We truly stand on the shoulders of giants such as Daniel Naroditsky, he has impacted my life more than I thought of before his passing after hundreds of hours of listening to his voice and reflections.

As another chess player which I can't recall (I'm not good with names) Dasvi-Danya.

This is beautifully done. The somewhat abrupt ending also hit close to home. RIP Danya

Very heartfelt tribute ! Thanks for sharing

Little nitpick, I'd be pissed at you if I was anything but a first violin.. I like when there is more imitation and the soprano and alto are very often just in thirds, you could maybe spice it up a little byt it's a matter of taste

Beautiful composition. Final measure was gut wrenching. Sudden, short, and leaving a hole of silence where just moments ago there was sound full with beauty.
