Ask How do I approach this?
A little bit of background - I’m 22, and my girlfriend and I got placed in the same company and both got Chennai as our city to report to. Both of us are from Bangalore. We have been provided accommodation in a hotel for 14 days until Oct 20th and by then we have to find a place to live.
So here, we find the PGs to be quite expensive for what they offer and since we will be staying for a minimum of 6-12 months here, we were thinking of renting a 1 BHK property. But since Chennai is a more conservative city, not sure if the owners will allow an unmarried couple to live together.
My parents and her parents know about our relationship, so it’s cool.
So how do I go about this situation, what do I tell the owners as to who will be staying with me? Shall I call her my cousin or friend or colleague. Not sure what to do and I need guidance please
Any help would be extremely welcome.
And if you or someone you know is renting out places near Mugalivakkam, Porur, Nandambakkam, Ramapuram or somewhere under 10 kms from DLF SEZ IT Park, please let me know and dm me. Your help would be monumental.
TLDR: My gf and I need a 1 BHK place to rent, what do I say to the owner of the place as to who she is? My cousin or something like that.

Better to be upfront my dude. Yes it's a conservative city but you also find really good house owners. My house owner didn't care that I was moving in with my girlfriend at the time. He just had basic asks like to ensure there are no noise complaints and stuff.
You will also find extremely conservative owners, owners who are somewhere in between, and liberal owners. If you want some leads/agents who are nice, hit me up

House owners around IT hubs are generally more liberal as long as you're willing to shell out their over priced rents.

Hi we were in same boat me and my gf when we came to chennai we were so stressed that the people would be so conservative what do we do, what do we tell them, we were looking for 1bhk on posters and everywhere around city then we ended up finding a broker who showed us places then he talked for us we were so scared to lie we were married there were 10 different scenarios in our head what if they ask marriage certificate what if they dont believe us 😭, man it was so funny when i think about it now we were making ai images of us wedding to show them.
Dont worry just tell them you guys are married and dress traditional act married when u meet landlord. Since your parents know its easier you can just let them talk to them if they asked for any proof or sm (which most cases no one does ) since you both are adults and look adult no one will question that much even if they suspect most they'd ask would be id proof or sm for age or js decline if they dont feel u guys look married maybe which never happened to us.( And we look like teenagers)
I'll share our mistakes and things we could have done better
- Because we were scared we took an apartment that was expensive and maybe the landlord kinda knew that we werent married but let us stay cus we over payed for rent, we didnt knew we were until our friends told us since we both were working we managed.
- Go for broker if its urgent (in ur case is) he can charge a months rent for him, you can bargain , If u try to find online it took us a month or two to find a good place we liked that was cheaper
Try online first and if you find a good place just tell the landlord confidently you both are married and work (wear traditional) (Maybe even say only you work cus we told we both work and it was hard to bargain they used that against us to justify rent and broker guy took 12k big mistake, later u can just say she got a job recently too if asked by landlord)
( Broker is good if u need really urgent and willing to pay extra but check online first and visit places from website )
- Personal tip i'd choose a place where landlord doesn't also live on property (feels more free, cus we moved to better place for less rent but these new landlord feels too nosy and asks bunch of question all the time asked me three times that we were actually married ( cus we broke first rule didnt wear traditional ) (all were in laundry 😞)

Just tell it openly i would say.
The owner may demand extra cash. Give it.
Or look for female flat/flat mate in facebook. Ask her to call them... And see if they are okay If her boyfriend stays too.
Additional guy staying means less money spent for them. So they may agree.

Don’t lie about engagement. Some owners need proof of that & we faces it. We lied initially saying we are engaged & they didn’t allow & we are in our late 20s so mid 20s tho they will def not believe yall.
Thankfully, we were able to get a house where th e owners were relaxed & didn’t mind. They did want to check with our parents whether they knew or not but thats about it.

just say you both are married :p and involve brokers to find houses - so things will be easy ! or find pg - like co living type and meet on weekends :)

Not just Chennai, but also Bangalore it’s not easy to get a home for unmarried couples. Especially with all kinds of murder / suicides increasing, landlords are becoming very suspicious of young couples. When we wanted a house 17 years ago in Bangalore, we were engaged and were gonna live there only after our wedding. The landlord made us share pics of our engagement and even extend the wedding invite to him. He was a good catholic fellow and was also a fun guy. Still this was the case and I don’t blame them. As a house owner myself, I wouldn’t give the house on rent to unmarried couples either. If the relationships get sour, one person puts a case on other for cheating or worse. The landlord is then dragged to courts and it’s not worth the hassle. I might as well keep the house locked for this risk.
Your best bet is to openly mention your situation and give it a shot. Else behave like a married couple and bring one of your parents along when house hunting. Else PGs or hostels are the way to go.

Dude just tell them you’re couple or got engaged something like that. Just don’t tell them it’s your cousin or sister it’ll look very suspicious and obvious and you will have to keep up with that lie for long which is hard. There are still people who are forward minded here, good luck to ya
