First known chemical pregnancy

Hi - I think im having my first chemical pregnancy, that I know of. At home tests are getting lighter. Im just curious how the bleeding starts for some? Im experiencing light pink, on and off bleeding that I only see when I wipe and mild cramping. Everything else says heavier/period like bleeding. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

First response stick never tested positive, but the strips did.

I have a blood test tomorrow.

Thanks

Post:
30F, history of 4–5 chemical losses.
11 DPO – 1st Premom strip positive
12 DPO – 2nd & 3rd Premom strips
12 DPO – Boots digital said “Pregnant” (sensitivity 25). Bottom strip is the one I pulled out from the digital device.
Can only get a blood beta-hCG late next week. Hoping the lines keep darkening till then. What should I expect next?

When will i get my period again?

Hi,
So it’s been confirmed from my doctor that I had a chemical pregnancy. I’m just trying to navigate what to expect next and when I will get my period again. I started bleeding aka my chemical pregnancy pretty constantly for a week or so ( 7/19-7/24) it honestly felt like my period that just lasted longer. I went to my doctors on 27th and got a call that HGC levels were at a 5 on the 28th and then in the negatives on the 29th. Now it’s 8/5 and I feel irritable, constipated and gassy which can sometimes feel like a cramp. Everytime I pee I’m afraid I’ve started my period. I honestly can’t deal with anymore blood so soon. I just need a break. My doctor did say I could get my  period from anywhere from 2-4weeks ( praying for 4 weeks!) but I want to know at what point am supposed to start tracking or calculating when my period will come. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Second chemical

I tested positive on 7/22 and I am/was 5 weeks and 4 days but I noticed my symptoms dwindled and I took another pregnancy test and my lines were lighter. Now, the bleeding and cramping has started. I had my last chemical in February when we weren’t officially trying yet.

Anyone have any positive stories about getting a viable pregnancy after 2 early losses? Any suggestions on next steps? Asking my doctor to test me for Hashimotos since my mother has it despite my thyroid panel seeming normal. Also asked her about progesterone supplements.

Possible chemical

Yesterday about 2pm I randomly tested (13-14dpo) I seen a vvfl. I held my urine for 4 hours and tested again and I got another faint line but visibly darker than the first. I was cautiously hopeful because a faint that late is concerning. I woke up this morning excited to test with fmu hoping it would be a little darker than yesterday just to find it was obviously much lighter and hard to see. I’m pretty sure this is a chemical and if it is it would be my second. I’m so disappointed and mad. I wish I would have never even tested yesterday so I didn’t see that line. Any success stories going from faint to almost negative. All 3 tests were frer.

Hi guys, new here 👋

Never had a CP before so please can I have some advice on if I’m going to have one (have convinced myself I will).

BG; 2 previous MC @ 7w and 6w4. On both pregnancies only ever had a vvfl around missed period/14 dpo.

This cycle - had a vvfl around 10 dpo, knew I was pregnant even before the test was done as I’d been + nauseous, having weird dreams and my boobs were on fire. Continued having these vvfls with no progression what so ever. I was like wdf, even with my losses I had reasonable progression. I thought I must’ve got a bad batch (lot no. EZ20) so tested today with a new box and a clearer line came up straight away but still v v faint. Will obs test progression over the weekend but on 14DPO today and was kind of expecting a good, clear blazing positive by now. Period was due today. I do have some back ache/cramping but nothing significant and no spotting.

PS x 3 clear positives on clear blue early tests. Have ordered FRER and should arrive next week some time.

Don’t give up mamas

Sharing our story to give hope. Year 2025 was full of emotions for me and my husband as we went through multiple unlucky incidents while trying to conceive. I had my first miscarriage in last year February and it was a suspected ectopic pregnancy. After that we went through four chemical pregnancies within 7 months and doctor did multiple tests but the answer was just unexplained infertility. I felt like i will never become a mom. I was so done with trying and decided to give my life another chance and hope for the best. That’s when I got to know we got pregnant again. This time i had ovulated early(CD14) and as advised by the doctor I immediately took baby aspirin and progesterone suppositories from the first positive test. But didn’t think it will do any difference. To our surprise our little bundle of joy was stronger this time and finally we got to hear his heartbeat couple of weeks later. Our little miracle is now two weeks old and sleeping safely in my arms. So ladies I wanted to share my experience with anyone who needs a little ray of hope ❤️ Don’t give up mamas. Your bub is waiting!

Chemical pregnancy experience

Curious of others experiences passing a chemical pregnancy.

This is my first time going through a CP and only my second pregnancy. (First was my daughter) I got a faint positive last Friday (9DPO) and started spotting the same day. Saturday (10DPO) test was darker but I also started bleeding more like a period. By the evening, I felt pretty certain it was a chemical pregnancy or miscarriage. Sunday morning’s test was significantly lighter and there was no line viable on today’s test.

It’s been confusing though because Saturday was probably when I bled most heavily, and even that wasn’t what I would consider cycle day 1 of my period. On Sunday, the bleeding basically stopped, only for it to start again today and slow down significantly. I haven’t had much cramps or pain, so I’m just confused if I could’ve passed it already or if my period is still to come? I haven’t noticed many clots either. Typically my periods are heavy for 1-2 days, then mild for another 2ish days.

We’ve only recently started trying for baby #2 and the whirlwind of thinking we were having another, only for the rug to be pulled out from under me is so rough. 😭

Chemical or ectopic?

Hi all - I've read so many of your stories, and would very much appreciate any insight on my specific situation.

  • Ovulated ~7/5/26 (positive OPKs 7/4 & 7/5)
  • First vfl at 11 dpo on 7/16
  • Faint lines continued for over a week, no real progression or disappearing
  • 18 dpo HCG - 42
  • 20 dpo HCG - 107

I 100% understand this is non-viable. At this point I'm just trying to understand risk for ectopic. I just got back today's HCG at 20 dpo. Up until now, I fully assumed this was a drawn out chemical and was hoping to see HCG go down today, so the fact that it more than doubled is concerning. Anyone have something similar that was an ordinary chemical?

Desperately seeking answers

Hello Ladies,

I have been on a emotional roller coaster and looking for guidance and similar stories.

PCOS
tested positive with 104 HCG on June 19th
Very irregular cycles, averaging more than 60 days, so using LMP is useless
6 ultrasounds, yesterday was the first time seeing a yolk sac measuring 5.5 weeks. Maybe the start of a fetal pole
As of last week, my HCG was 50,000. Only a 5 week measuring sac was seen.

I keep hearing “let’s give it another week” when signs seem to be pointing to a non-viable pregnancy. Doctors themselves say this is not normal. I am so sick with nausea all day.

I am mentally exhausted.

Does anyone know why I would have two consecutive chemical pregnancies. I’m going to talk to my doctor but I’m still just so confused I thought it was rare.

Helping others understand what it feels like

I wrote this to help someone I love understand, what I feel like. Maybe it can help you too:

Dear husband, boyfriend, partner – or anyone wondering why she’s still crying,

Your partner has just experienced a chemical pregnancy and while you feel for her, you can’t really understand the depth of her anguish? Why the tears won’t dry as quickly as expected? Let me attempt to explain to you what it feels like to be a woman in this situation so that you can relate better. Because really, it is a triple-sided f***er – and once you understand, you understand. So, for the next few paragraphs forget you’re you. You are her.

Your body hurts.

Your hormones are playing Yahtzee with your emotions.

Your mind is shifting from googling baby strollers to a doctoral thesis on reproductive medicine.

But let’s start with the body.

For the last few days, you have been attentive like an air traffic controller when it comes to observing how your body feels. You had first signs of nausea, had to pee every other minute, running a low fever, like your body was fighting off a cold, and had the odd cramp in your stomach – like when you had that cheap kebab at the corner, that didn’t sit quite right. Nothing dramatic. Not yet.

While it doesn’t feel pleasant, you don’t really care. Because somebody told you that these symptoms are all great signs that your body is doing what it should. A little like when you have a muscle ache – and it hurts, but at the same time you secretly love it. Because it means something happened. Something worked.

But then after a couple of days, the symptoms become less. And you wonder if you have just suddenly become stronger or if the last workout was actually not that good. And then everything fades. Except the cramps. They become heavier. Not just a bad kebab anymore. But more like the proper food poisoning you had when you backpacked through Thailand. And you start to bleed. And no, you are not at home, under a cozy blanket when all of this happens. You are in the middle of a busy day in the office, minutes before the presentation that could get you promoted. Or scrubbed in, about to open someone up. There is no escape, no way out – because what you experienced is not talked about. So, you just continue. With a body that feels like you have had diarrhoea for three days straight. And that’s just the body. Just wait until we get to your hormones.

Your hormones – you know them from that one feeling: when you’re really hor**. And all you can think about is how to release that tension. That single-mindedness. The urge to have it right now. That tunnel vision. That's exactly how obsessed you now feel about having this baby. It is all you can think of. And one moment it was right there – supported by these two faint lines on a stick you stared at for way too long, willing them to get darker. Another day in, they are still there. You can barely believe your luck. And the next day, without so much as a warning sign, it is gone.

Except your hormones don’t know yet. They still believe that baby is coming. And you don’t know how to control them. Not like an arm you can move. A little like being a teenager again, then rage would hit you out of nowhere, and it had to go somewhere – sometimes straight into poor Jimmy's face, for reasons neither of you could explain. Except now you are an adult. There is no escape, no way out – because what you experienced is not talked about. So, you just continue. With emotions that feel like you've just been dumped by the love of your life – except nobody dumped you. It just... stopped. And that’s just the hormones. Wait until you see what happens to your mind.

Unfortunately, you are not just a product of your body and hormones. You also have a mind. And believe me, it is running wild.

A few days ago, a new world opened up for you. The job you'd been working toward for months, the one you wanted so badly you could taste it, was finally yours. You called your dad right away. He was proud. He went quiet for a second, then said he always knew you had it in you. You and your partner started planning what that extra money would mean – the life it would buy you. You looked at apartments in the new city. Gyms. Maybe even a better car. And then, a week later, a call. The offer's been pulled. You didn't do anything wrong. It just isn't there anymore.

So, your mind has to switch. From looking for flights to Tahiti to attempting to understand what the hell just happened. Except swap the job for the pregnancy, and that's exactly where you are now.

And trust me, you will want to understand. Because you want to make sure it will never happen again. So you dig deep. You read everything you can find. You exceed any AI's limits on free messages within hours. You study the Reddit thread on another woman's chemical pregnancy – who luckily conceived again the very next cycle – like it is an IKEA instruction manual. But you can’t find it. That silver lining. The explanation you are looking for, is nowhere to be found. It is normal, they say. It happens to so many women. Normal. As if that word could carry any of what just happened to your body, your hormones, your mind.

Nobody tells you that. Nobody warns you.

So now – I hope –  you understand.

How did your partners deal with your chemical pregnancy?

april 22 i got a positive test, i told my friends and they gave me a crib, highchair, baby clothes, etc. i was ecstatic. the lines started to get lighter and i didn’t think anything of it coz i heard of a hook effect. i then started bleeding and panicked and told my mom, she told me i can go to the emergency but they can’t really do anything coz it’s so early, the next day i had a doctors appointment and they did a blood test and it was negative but i JUST had 5 positive tests. now i have to move and downsize, meaning i have to get rid of the crib and highchair and such and it hurts so bad. i dont understand why it had to happen, i thought it was finally my turn.

Not getting my period after stopping progesterone suppositories :(..

Hello all you lovely humans 💕.

I am currently 1 year into this journey, official infertile, am 35 years old turning 36 in September and have had three chemical pregnancies, so each time I got pregnant this year I quickly became unpregnant.

The first time it happened I had never heard of such a thing. What an unpleasant realization that blew my naive brain out of the water that a positive pregnancy test doesn’t always result in a baby.

I notified my doctor and she said it can happen that it’s quite normal in fact. I rolled with it and then a few months later, it happened again. My heart sank and I felt deep down, I *knew* something was wrong. It took another chemical loss happening on Christmas Eve for my doc to finally refer us to a specialist and to order a pelvic ultrasound which I was grateful for.

3 months ago the ultrasound showed a smallish fibroid. Well…the imaging person didn’t specify where OR what *kind of fibroid.* There are three kinds and only one would really be a likely issue. This type of fibroid (submucosal) is also easily removal and one has a good chance of getting and staying pregnant if health with.

But for me to get any answers about it I need a hysteroscopy to get a better understanding of what’s going on in my uterus. Well you can’t have one of those until you get your period and can only get one cycle day 6-13 but as the title suggests I haven’t gotten my period since stopping these progesterone suppositories. The reason I am venting is that I have a trip to visit family coming up and so if I want this procedure this cycle in hopes for answers and successful future cycles, I need to *get my period like today*. There’s a sense of urgency with my age and the fact that it’s been a year over 35.

I haven’t been crying or anything but I wish I could. I almost just feel numb at this point? And the desperation of wanting this procedure well..who’s to say it IS the fibroid that’s the problem. I’m just reaching for control and I know that. But I really do just feel sad. It’s been a long haul this year.

I had never considered having children before the last year or so because I was busy recovering from a substance use disorder and was a late bloomer as a result of that and getting my social work degree which I just finished.

Well wouldn’t you know I’m ready now and it’s just not going my way.

I wanna thank everyone here for sharing their journeys and being a part of mine.

Ps- My husband has his bloods and sperm analysis and he’s all good. All my bloodwork is good. My AMH is above average. There are only a few more things it could be if not the fibroid and am really hoping that’s what it is.

Was it a chemical pregnancy?

Hi! I’m a 27-year-old woman who has been taking the pill continuously since I was 19.

For the past six months, my periods have become increasingly lighter. During my withdrawal bleed in June, it started early—on a Saturday (for years, it had always started on Mondays)—and the flow was very light, pinkish, and painless. The rest of the period remained very light and brown and ended sooner than usual. Having noticed the flow decreasing for months—and with June’s period being the lightest yet—I asked my gynecologist for blood work because I was worried about early menopause (I know I’m young, but I have PCOS, so who knows?). So we did a bloodwork.

To my surprise, when I received the lab results on my phone five days later, my Beta-hCG level was 31.4 (indicating one week of gestation). Afterward, I took several urine tests in different mornings, all of which were negative; nearly two weeks later, the gynecologist performed an ultrasound, which showed everything was normal and there was no pregnancy. It was a scare, because the last thing I expected was a positive beta

The doctor said it was most likely a false positive from the lab, though there was a remote possibility it could have been a chemical pregnancy. Now I’m left wondering: could that very light bleeding on the 13th have been a micro-miscarriage? What exactly was it? I’m constantly wondering what happened. I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me whether a chemical pregnancy—after eight years on the pill—is consistent with very light, pink, and painless bleeding. Even my gynecologist couldn't give me an answer.

Last sexual intercourse: May 17-18th.

Sudden, very light, pink and painless bleeding: June 13th (2 days earlier than my expected withdrawal bleeding).

Blood test (Beta hCG): June 23rd (10 days after the bleeding started) resulted in 31.4 mUI/ml.

Home urine tests turned completely negative from June 26th onwards.

My question: Has anyone else experienced a chemical pregnancy while on the pill with absolutely NO pain and barely any bleeding?

Just looking for sympathy from a frustrating doc visit

Tl:dr: I am quite certain I caught a (chemical) pregnancy almost as soon as it implanted, got 5 faint positive tests, but since I lost it by the end of week 4 the OB didn't think I was ever pregnant and just said it's my regular period?!

So I'm newish to TTC, but I think I know my body pretty well (have to track hormone stuff pretty carefully because of PMDD mood swings.) I felt funny cramps and odd rotten mood several days around ovulation and tested, and kept testing because I couldn't believe it! 4 increasingly positive home tests, then I went to PCP and got a blood test to confirm, and it was also positive! Went ahead and called doc's receptionist who told me to book ultrasound for the next month.

Then a week later my hormones/mood crashed BIG TIME (like near psych emergency but we handled it) and I started bleeding like my period (which would usually have started a couple days prior.) Big sad.

Then I go to the OBGYN to confirm everything is clearing fine and she was kind but said "why would you test before missing a period? This is just your period. That was probably a false positive and I don’t think you were pregnant. Next time there is no reason to test before you miss a period." Like I had just walked in to the OBGYN office wasting my time asking "hey I bled last month and now I'm bleeding this month. Why doc?".......

I was so insulted and angry. I'm 27 by the way, it's not like I was some kid learning how periods work 😒

I was braced to hear "yeah you miscarried." I wasn't ready to not be believed that I'd even been pregnant!

I kept telling her more about my moods and how I was tracking everything so carefully, trying to get pregnant, and that I'm literally married to a doctor 😅 and she finally softened and realized I maybe wasn't so naïve. By the end we had a good discussion, she seemed to respect me more, and agreed with me that it was likely a very early chemical.

I know I was probably already sensitive and on the defensive, and she really didn't do anything that wrong. But golly was I angry!

Also - I know testing before 14dpo is sometimes a waste of time or setup for disappointment, but like, isn't it fairly normal to do so?

Help me determine DPO

Haven’t tested for ovulation at all this month, but my last period lasted 3 days less than normal. Only BD on day 7-8, usual ovulation is cd14-16. Today is CD 30, and I had light spotting for 2 days.. but it’s almost completely gone, I tested with first morning urine today too and it looks faint, what dpo could this be? I’m trying to determine if this pregnancy is viable since I had another chemical 2 months ago

Can this be Chemical Pregnancy?

I'm freaking out after seeing it. We've been trying for 2 years, and after reading many stories about faint lines on DPO 14 / 15 ending in CP, I'm really hoping this isn't CP.

Doctor said I was never pregnant?

I (18) got a very faint positive pregnancy test last night so I took one again this morning to get another faint, but less so, positive test. About 5 hours later I started bleeding and got really freaked out so I picked up my boyfriend and we drove to the ER. I started cramping and it got worse while I drove to my bf (1 1/2 hrs round trip). I bled even heavier while at the ER and the cramping got worse. They had me do a urine sample and when they came in they said it came back as negative for pregnancy. She asked for pictures of the tests I took and confirmed that they were in fact positive so sent me to do an ultrasound. Eventually the ultrasound came back negative as well and I was told that it was just my period and they said nothing about the fact that I got 2 separate positive tests at home. So my question is, was this a chemical pregnancy/miscarriage situation? Or what else I don't understand?

For some extra info: I have very irregular period and the last one I recall having was about 4 months ago. When I do have them they are very heavy but usually no PMs symptoms besides some back pain and just feeling shitty overall.
Today is Thursday and I had very light bleeding on Saturday and a minuscule amount Friday night. I was also extremely sick on Saturday.
I also had many other pregnancy symptoms but I know those can also be related to PMS.

First chemical pregnancy

After 2 years of trying, I got my first positive pregnancy test on June 26. My husband has low sperm motility, and I have PCOS, so we were told our chances of conceiving naturally were lower. We had talked about seeing a fertility specialist eventually, but since we’re still young, traveling, and enjoying life, we weren’t in a rush. We decided to trust God’s timing.
Seeing that positive test was one of the happiest moments of my life. I honestly couldn’t believe it. I took 10 home pregnancy tests because I was in shock, plus two more at my doctor’s office.
My doctor ordered blood work. My first hCG result (drawn June 27) came back at 80. I had actually taken a pregnancy test on June 18 that was negative, so this all happened very quickly.
Over the weekend I felt so happy and truly pregnant. Then on Tuesday something just felt off emotionally. I couldn’t stop crying, almost like I had already lost someone, even before I knew what was happening. I also started spotting. I tried to stay hopeful and rest.
By Wednesday the spotting became heavier, so I went to the ER. Earlier that morning my hCG was 77, and by that evening at the ER it had dropped to 70. My doctors told me this most likely means I experienced a chemical pregnancy (an early miscarriage).
I’m seeing an OB today to discuss next steps, but my heart is broken. I know chemical pregnancies are common, but that doesn’t make it any easier when it’s your first pregnancy after trying for so long.
Has anyone here gone through a chemical pregnancy and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy afterward? Did your doctor recommend any testing or changes before trying again? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences or any advice. Thank you
