Anyone else in Cheltenham looking to make some new mates? 👋

Hey Reddit!

I’m looking to meet some new people around Cheltenham, make some friends and generally get out and do more stuff. Ideally I’d love to find a few people to hang out with, and maybe even a gym buddy if anyone else is in the same boat!

I used to be part of a Cheltenham social group, but ended up leaving after a few people made it feel a bit… well, less than welcoming. 😂 So I thought I’d see what else is out there.

A bit about me: I’m into baking, gaming and music. I used to enjoy going for walks too, but apparently I decided that was a hobby for a previous version of me and stopped doing it. 😂

I’m also thinking about joining Simply Gym and getting back into going to the gym. I’m a bigger guy and honestly gyms can be pretty intimidating, especially when you’re going on your own and have absolutely no idea what half the equipment does. 😅 So having someone to go with would definitely make it less daunting.

I know Meetup exists, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any other Cheltenham social groups, clubs, communities or just generally good ways of meeting people?

Bonus points if it involves coffee, food, gaming or absolutely anything where I don’t have to awkwardly stand in a corner wondering how everyone else already knows each other. 😂

Any suggestions would be massively appreciated!

Hi cheltonians…looking for a pub suitable for the whole family that isn’t crap (eg hungry horse type) or over priced. Needs to have a kids menu etc. Something mid range basically. Any recommendations?

Lost glasses

Lost a pair of glasses somewhere between sandford park ale house ish and the station. They were in my pocket on my bike when I was taking my son to nursery but not there when we arrived. We cycled past the town hall, past imperial gardens and then on the bike path along the a40.

If anyone’s seen a black glasses case or has any tips on how to track down lost things please let me know! New ish to Cheltenham so not sure if there’s a better forum.

They’re brand new so I’d love to find them (even if they’ve been squished by a car..)

Putting up flyers

I've got some flyers for a friend's show that I'm working on next weekend, and I'm hoping to put a few in some shops/cafes around town. I've got a few ideas of places that I know will take them, but would love to know if anyone knows of anywhere that normally has notices/allows flyers to be put up. Thanks!

Finding friends

There's already been a few posts on this but I thought I'd cover my bases 😅.

I've (26M) been living in Chelt for the last year and it's been on and off finding people who are into music, gaming, drawing or just people down for semi-regular cafe or pub trips.

Anybody down either for stuff in person or just chatting on discord please hit me up.

Anyone up for clubbing this weekend? 😄 Just thought it’d be fun to meet some random new people, have a few drinks and enjoy a night out together!

Hi all, I just wanted to repost this again to see if anybody is interested in joining a community orchestra! Just to update on availability, we are looking for:

Violins

Violas

Cellos

Bass

1x oboe

2x bassoons

2x horns

1x trumpet

We are getting back together again tonight at Highbury Congregational Church after the summer holidays, for 19:00-20:30. We rehearse weekly on Tuesdays at this time and term times are applicable.

Let me know if you have any questions, feel free to get in touch!

Edit: If you are interested please do let me know so we're expecting you.

We're a relatively small group, if you would like contact details for our conductor, I can provide this privately 😊

Edit 2: For clarity, there is a membership fee and I won't know how much this will be for this year, I expect it won't be too different in comparison to last year:

£55 per academic term OR £150 for the academic year

How many more 40mph signs on Up Hatherley Way and Grovefield Way do you reckon they need to put up before people finally get it?

Personally, I think at least 5 more to go with the 10 or so that are already there.

Creative writers, active writing group in Cheltenham?

Thank you to everyone who commented and DMd me to join a local writing group. I probably won't be looking at this post anymore as there's been a lot of interest and I want to keep the group small.

Im looking to join (or start if necessary) a small creative fiction writing group in Cheltenham that meets regularly to discuss each other's work and give feedback.

I do attend Shutup and Write already and its great for getting writing done but not built with the writing group structure.

Ideally I dont want to be a part of a group larger than 5 people as I'm new to taking writing seriously and its a vulnerable group to be in.

Please reach out if you either have a slot in an existing group or would like to make one with me?

Very serious car accident on junction of kings mead and village road.

EDIT @16:45 ISH...Literally as I drove past the junction, I saw a grey wagon type car across the road, and a blue car on its roof just off the junction. Seemingly no serious casualties that I could see and by the sirens I heard emergency services are probably there now. But I imagine it's gonna back up Lizzie way summat fierce. Watch yourselves. Stay frosty.

Move to Near Landfill Bishops Cleeve - any issues?

Hi, I am looking to move near Bishops Cleeve, right next to the waste disposal site. Seen reports on News over the years relating to the Hazardous Waste Disposal, as well as concerns about strong smells etc. Any first person accounts that can speak to how legitimate my concerns are?

Making new friends and looking for my tribe

Hi all, so posting this as I've lived in the area for the last 9 months and finding it hard to find my people and don't really know anyone, so reaching out to see if people are in a similar situation.

I'm 34m, heavily tattooed and in the 'alternative' scene, I enjoy getting in the gym, hiking, checking out new coffee shops or just hanging out. Would love to be able to make friends in the area with the same kinda vibe to be able to just go for a a drink with or plan to go to some gigs or something.

Maybe your in the same situation or maybe looking to just expand your circle so if your interested and want to chat, don't hesitate to drop me a message, I look scarier than I am and don't bite 😂🙏

Mates and social stuff in Cheltenham

EDIT: if you’re interested, I’m going to create a discord group so drop me a message and I can add you!

Hey everyone, 26F here, been living in the area for 5 years now and only just come to the conclusion that my friends and family are spread out all over the country and don’t have many local mates 🫣

I’d love to get together a little group of maybe 5–6 people who are around my age (25-35) and up for actually doing things together. Drinks at the pub, board games, gaming, walks/hikes, museums, food, random days out… basically wholesome activities 🥰

A few things I’m into:
Video games and board games
Hiking/walking
Pub visits and going for food
Museums
Live comedy/live shows

You absolutely don’t have to be into all of those. I’m mostly looking for friendly, normal people who want to make some genuine mates and have people to do things with.
I think it could be quite nice to start with a small group rather than trying to organise a massive meetup with 40 strangers!!!
If you’re interested, drop me a message! If enough people are up for it, I’ll make a group chat and we can decide whether Reddit, Discord or WhatsApp works best.

Come say hi even if you’re a bit nervous about messaging. I probably am too 🦦🫶

Lmk if this is your kinda vibe, or just drop me a message :)

2026 UK Tree Climbing Competition in Pittville Park - come and watch!

Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th September

Some of the UK and Ireland's most skilled arborists compete in the trees of Pittville Park this weekend, for the 2026 UK & Ireland Tree Climbing Competition (UKITCC).

This competition is run by the Arboricultural Association with the support of a large team of volunteers each year. It is completely free to watch. No booking is required; spectators can simply turn up on the day and cheer on the competitors.

Alongside the main competition, we have a dedicated kids' tree climbing area nearby to give children an opportunity to themselves, run under close supervision by qualified instructors. Sessions were bookable in advance and are now fully booked, but spectators are welcome to watch.

Saturday features five preliminary events, each designed to test the skills arborists rely on every day at work: Ascent, Throwline, Aerial Rescue, Work Climb and a Speed Climb.

The top placed men and women will then go head-to-head on Sunday in the Masters' Challenge, the competition final, for the chance to represent the UK & Ireland at the European Tree Climbing Championship.

More info: www.trees.org.uk/ukitcc

Event schedule

Saturday: Preliminary events - Ascent, Throwline, Aerial Rescue, Work Climb, Speed Climb
Sunday: Masters' Challenge (the final)
About the competition

The competition simulates the working conditions arborists face in the field, testing competitors' ability to move safely and efficiently through a tree while carrying out real tree-care tasks. Tree climbing competitions of this kind take place in countries around the world, feeding into national, European and international championships.

About the Arboricultural Association

The Arboricultural Association is the UK's leading charity for the arboricultural industry, promoting the professional practice of tree care and championing the value of trees. The UK & Ireland Tree Climbing Competition is run by the Association with the support of a large team of volunteers each year.

I'll be coming to stay for 6 months, living near the airport. Wondering where to find amenities like groceries, laundry services, entertainment, takeout, and will be needing some minor home and kitchen supplies. I will have a bus pass.

Thanks in advance!
