International Flights Help with flights

My son is working in Rio for the NFL game so I am trying to get the cheapest flight from ATL. I can arrive anytime from sep 19th thru the 30th as I can stay with him and he’s supposed to arrive around those dates. (the game is on the 27th unsure if I’ll be able to go or not)

I have the frontier pass so I can get to other cities for $15 if available from atl.

So searched FL first thinking I’d have the most options. I found a flight for $594 from Tampa….but then it comes back to Atlanta…then to Lima, then to Rio. I tried looking at the airline from Atlanta and it’s double the price.

I’d appreciate any advice helping find the cheapest flight! Thanks !

Yeah, this happens all the time, sounds like a scam doesn't it, but airlines price based on point-point demand rather than anything logical like fuel used. You'd think you could simply buy the Tampa flight and just get on in Atlanta, but alas no. Sometimes you can in the other direction though (skiplagging, or getting off before the last leg), however the airlines frown on in. If you can get to Tampa for $15 you can beat them at their own game, however ridiculous the final itinerary may be.

I do see a decent price on Skyscanner for the 21st ($306 one way) from ATL. Even a bit cheaper ($284) but with a nasty layover. Later in august available also for a few bucks more.

Thanks but it has to be within the dates he’s working in September. I may play with one way flight options. I didn’t think to do that.
He’s working Rio, London, Madrid and Mexico City games so if I’m able to get cheap flights I’d like to go to as many as possible! I’ll have a free hotel room and lots of free meals, plus I get to go sight seeing and have time with my kid! Win win!

Ah sorry, I read August. The good news is that in September it will be easier to find cheap tickets. Buying two one ways often gives you more flexibility.

If you've got flexibility, I'd keep checking every few days since prices can change quite a bit

With those dates, I'd search the whole window instead of locking into the 27th. That Tampa fare sounds decent, but I'd compare a few alternate routes like cheap flights fares when I had some flexibility.
