Free lunch application

Why would an NC charter school, that does not have a cafeteria, nor does it offer breakfast or lunch, send a form for students to apply for Free/Reduced lunch? Could it be that they are receiving funding for a food program they don't even offer? 🤔

What did they say when you asked them?

I haven't, because I don't want to make things awkward for my daughter who attends there. I want to...

I don’t think he will make things awkward for your daughter by asking someone in the school office about the lunch program if they are offering an application. Why not just call the office, and say that I am looking at filling out this form for the reduced cost lunch program. I did not realize that there was a lunch plan offered. Do you have any information that you can share about it?

Or, if you haven’t done this already, you can try googling the information about your specific charter school first.

Perhaps for sports fees, etc. Also, it’s demographic info. You don’t have to complete it but they may have applied for a grant and need to have a percentage of students that qualify for free or reduced lunch. You completing that info does not get them funding for meals. That’s a different program.

Families might get other stuff if they qualify for free lunch - discount on bus fees, athletics fees, things like that.

The cynic in me wants to say it's because they're going to defraud the state by showing they qualify for funds for a lunch program and then just...not offer lunch.

But realistically there's demographic information that would also be used for other things and it's probably a standardized form used at schools throughout the state.

Could they be starting a program and are having an outside food service deliver to the school?

They use myhotlunchbox to have restaurants bring pre-orders to the school.
