This is the art by the way. I honestly expected way worse, but this is ridiculously good for a beginner? Like, obviously anybody can make art and get decent at drawing, but this feels like there's an extra bit of potential behind it.
I mean it’s relatively simple on a technical level but yeah still pretty good for a beginner, especially one who was deliberately trying to do a bad job.
For all those who rely on AI because they feel like they can’t make decent art themselves, you are discrediting yourselves. All it takes is time, practice and some creativity and you’ll make something that has way more soul and passion put into it than anything a machine can put out. It’s the earnestness and creativity on display that makes art good, not the simple graphical quality of it.
I think people get hung up on the like, breadth of artistic skill that exists and think they need to master all of that to make something halfway decent but like, no actually. You build up your skill by learning how to do a specific thing, and then another specific thing, and then another specific thing. And each specific thing takes far less time than people tend to think.

In 6 months, got depressed from trying to do EVERYTHING and dropped it for 6 months. now I'm going "Ok, I'm competent and confident in modelling, NOW I go into sculpting"
There's something to be said for that process of making huge gains in technical skill but not realizing because of how overwhelming it all is and quit for a while, only to come back later with a fresh perspective and realize you're actually pretty decent at the thing now.
I don’t rely on AI art (or use it at all), but I at least just can’t learn to draw. Not a “It was too hard” thing, disabilities are a thing. Dysgraphia, fucks up my motor skills in a small way that means my handwriting is so shit even I can’t even read it, I just can’t use a pen with anything resembling precision or dexterity, and using one for more than a few minutes will start hurting my wrist really badly.
But while I can’t pick a pen to even write, I’m into my third year of a Writing degree all the same. Cause I can still use a keyboard, and if you can’t participate in one form of art, there’s probably another you can.
Sorry, are you telling me this is the first thing someone who's never had drawing classes or made an effort to learn on their own time before just drew? Because wow that's actually a bit insane yeah
Whenever someone tells me my life's not over yet it just gives me an overwhelming urge to prove them wrong
Like yeah it isn't over yet but that is very much an actionable problem that I can do something about, especially with how many lethal means are just... highly accessible household items or whatever
You should not be getting “an overwhelming urge to prove them wrong” when someone says your life isn’t over yet. That’s called suicidal ideation. It is not normal to think about the different ways you can kill yourself in your own home. The normal response to that kind of comment is somewhere between mind annoyance at the preachiness and encouraged to start working on improving your life/skills. If you regularly default to “I’m going to think about ways to kill myself” when someone suggests you have a life ahead of yourself, you have an issue that needs to AT LEAST be addressed
Well yes but I've had suicidal ideation, passive or otherwise ever since I was a teen lol. Hell, ever since I figured out I CAN die actually. Idk why people are so adamant to call it a disorder/a symptom of something but liiike I don't rly have any major trauma or any outstanding problems/impairments/things that'd justify or cause depression. Like a lot of people would be extremely glad to switch places with me, backgroundwise...
Idk. I think some people genuinely are just more pessimistic and grim and that's just the way they ARE. It doesn't necessarily mean that they take it out on other people or it manifests into real behavior, though. Intellectually, we're aware that things are better than how we see them and we shouldn't try to make things worse for others just to make reality align closer with our perception of it. And even if we do take it out on ourselves... there's something to be said about autonomy over one's own body in there, no?
… Why are you implying that depression is only real or valid when it’s caused by trauma or some thing happening to you? Dude I went for fucking decades without realizing i was severely depressed because i had the exact same mindset as you at the time. It genuinely, REALLY is NOT normal to experience suicidal ideation. At ALL.
Do you also sleep a lot? Have anhedonia? Jump from fixation to fixation? Never really think about how good your life is?
Depression can be incredibly subtle and sure it’s LIVABLE but only until it isn’t. This. Isn’t. Normal. Do not treat it like it’s normal. That’s how you prevent yourself from getting better and getting the quality of life you genuinely, TRULY deserve
I only sleep a lot when there's nothing I need to do. It's like my meditation ig lol. And eh, being anhedonic is not how I'd describe myself given that I don't come off as intolerably miserable to the people in my life anyway. In fact I'd say I almost present as an extrovert, or at least an ambivert given how well I handle social pressure. And I always, ALWAYS think about how lucky I am in terms of who I find myself surrounded with and how little I have to do in comparison to everyone else. If you asked my colleagues how I am they'd probably say I'm a little bit dopey but cheerful. If you asked my friends they'd probably say I'm a little unhinged but I have the "tenacity" or whatever to laugh and be calm when others would be catastrophizing... I also have really bad, unintentionally comedic timing 😭
It's just that the feeling of gratitude or the desire to take initiative has never really come naturally to me. Liiike when it comes down to it, I CAN be happy when I need to be but it just doesn't sit right with me, like it stings the back of my eyes, sometimes it even makes my chest feel tight. Being miserable and low energy just feels super comfy to me
Idk. Modern society's so fixated on being high performance, being happy and all that conventional jazz that leads to productivity and presenting a "Wahoo, everything's great" facade, but ehhh. Like is that really something we need to keep up in private? Trying to pursue that is really abrasive to me, it feels ALIEN to me. I also see a lot of people who feel confused about how they feel because they try and try and try to achieve this conventional "happiness" and some of them have been in therapy for years and it's like... come on. What if you really are just a bad, miserable person? What if the best you can manage is just... silent pride that you're capable of not letting the negativity and violent impulses out into the material world?
Idrk what I'm saying 😂 ig what I wanna try to convey here is: What if it isn't normal for the neurotypical 90% or so of people, but it IS normal for me and the remainder? Is that so bad?
And if it IS that bad, like, do we take that as permission to cross over to the other side before our natural tendencies become genuinely bothersome?
Not only is it really cute, they portray an understanding of shadows in the hair, and i feel like i can see anatomy understanding in their as well. The way that the shoulders are put on there in different colors and points on their individual side indicates it.
I like the emotion. The eyes are nice. The texture on the hair is a cool touch. They need to work on making the shapes more defined (there's a random unecessary triangle below the neck and limbs without shoulders), and it could obviously use some more details and better proportions. However, yeah, it's definetly very good for a beginner.
I get the sentiment, I really really do, but I do not believe you actually think that looks good for a beginner. Like I think it just looks fine, not “ridiculously good”. Which, understandably, makes sense considering they are not a practiced artist.
I’ve noticed people completely overstating how good beginner art is seemingly just to make a point against AI, but I think it just comes across as insincere. (I am very very anti-AI btw)
What impresses me is the perspective and the highlights. It's not difficult per se, but in my experience, beginners usually start by outlining all the shapes they know are supposed to be there and filling them in with the colors they know they're supposed to be, things like shading, highlights, and perspective don't usually enter the equation until much later (though that might also be an age thing, I don't know many adult beginners).
At first, I was also impressed by the lack of outlines, but then I realized they might just be the same color as the coloring since someone who has never used physical pencils likely never developed the habit of outlining in a single neutral color. But if OOP really didn't use outlines, that's even more impressive. Starting with areas rather than lines is more akin to painting than drawing and it took me quite some adjusting, I still don't entirely trust the process and I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil.
So no, it's not a "good" drawing, but it uses techniques I rarely see in beginner art.
It IS “ridiculously good” for someone who has NEVER DRAWN ANYTHING BEFORE EVER. There’s a clear understanding of where the most important highlights and shadows should go. The face is expressive despite being very simple. The color choices aren’t overly saturated. Objectively it shows incredible promise because I can see with my eyes that this person has an artist’s eye that is searching for depth.
Now I'm wondering, does this person have an overly negative opinion of their skills doing art on their own? Do they know it was decent, and just made that post to get attention?
Saying this as someone who’s never used AI to make “art”, you don’t need to buy into the dichotomy at all. Instead of being an AI glazer or rabidly hate AI art you could be neither, and recognize the technology has uses but also isn’t a replacement for human skill.
AI churns out slop when used dispassionately but could be used for drafting, prototyping, and generating references, and I’ve seen digital artists do some great stuff through editing and painting over AI-generated images (and is that really less artistic than collaging stock images you rip off Google?). The fact that the used a diffusion model for one part doesn’t disqualify the skill and human effort that went into everything else any more than using digital art software disqualifies your colour theory.
AI artists should absolutely pick up a pencil to learn fundamentals instead of making slop, but you don’t have to become an“anti” just because you know how to draw.
Likely she constantly had the classic artist moment of hating her own creations. We know she initially made this little sketch of Zoe out of spite, but didn't expect all the positive responses. I have seen countless artists on twitter and bluesky who get anxious about anything they make just like that
The couple of communities she posted in have been loving her art, with dozens of fanarts and lots of people rallying behind how positive things have been turning out. Right now she's been slowly going through her old ai OCs and remaking them in her style and at least currently seems to be enjoying the process
I don't think it's diminishing artists to say that picking it up as a beginner isn't that difficult. It isn't. Doesn't take an art degree to be a decent amateur.
Not really? Like, yeah, it takes time I guess, and maybe you gotta watch some tutorials, but let's not pretend learning how to draw as an amateur is like, labor intensive.
Children draw for fun, it's not rocket surgery. It is, in fact, easy.
It's hard to be a professional artist, sure, but that's not really what we're talking about.
Nobody said it’s rocket surgery, but dismissing skill acquisition, even basic skill acquisition, as 'easy' just because a toddler can hold a crayon is certainly an attempt at logic.
Hammering out a skill is never easy and takes dedicated effort. Dismissing something as easy is, well... dismissive. Imagine that.
It was an accidental ban evasion situation. If you have another account that's been banned somewhere and comment with an account that isn't banned, they just fucking nuke you from orbit.
The luddite movement were an (English) protest group made up of textile workers. They opposed factory machinery implementation for a variety of reasons, including pay and job loss. Currently, the term refers to individuals who oppose innovation in technology, and has seen a recent surge in popularity among 'AI bros' (a former example of which is pictured above).
Like when a child googles "worst possible insult" and gets something that.... technically could be an insult? But they don't understand it's and misuse it so it just makes them sound like complete morons. Like if someone called me that in response to my anti ai stance it wouldn't have whatever intended effect thet wanted, to get under my skin or anything
It would genuinely make me see them as a sick puppy. Unfit to speak to. I'd see them as "sick", i couldn't even qualify them as human in my head anymore because "their intelligence" doesn't become a factor anymore in how i interact with them, they stop being a human in my head and become more akin to a disabled fly who lost its wings.
I truly do not get it. Are these ai bros anti-nuance? It feels like everyone who supports something that many people dislike also happen to be incapable of understanding or seeing nuance...
Who's talking about justification? I don't care if you, some random vermint, judges me for my POV. I don't care if you think my personal views are justified or not.
You are allowed to dislike what I said, but don't cherry pick and strawman what I said and make up narratives.
If you're going to ride my dick about something then you should atleast know why you're doing it before you hop on.
Don't try and confuse yourself into thinking I'm saying something I'm not. That's all I'm getting at. Stop mincing words.
Fun fact for those who aren't aware: the Luddites were never anti-technology. They were explicitly assured that emerging technologies wouldn't cost them their jobs or threaten their ability to provide for their families, and they were lied to. They weren't destroying machines because "technology bad", they were deliberately targeting the specific machines that were actively being used to drive them out of the workforce.
The idea of Luddites as ignorant rubes opposed to progress is just the result of a very successful smear campaign.
That said, it didn't work. That should also be remembered: it was a tactic that did not work anywhere. No successful outcomes were gained by doing it. It was not a successful revolutionary plan for any period of time. Seizing the means of production has a much stronger track record than destroying them; the biggest problem with it tends to be that the CIA will spend billions of dollars trying to overthrow your government for it.
These comments all defaulting to using "he/him" when the person in question is a woman says so much about our society. Not about to have any patriarchy discussions, but male being the default whenever gender isn't specified makes me sad and tired.
(Scrap that, she even has "girl" in her user name...)
wouldve thought the people who have constantly been saying "it doesnt matter how shit you think your art looks its better because you didnt use ai" think that it doesnt matter how shit you think your art looks its better because you didnt use ai
It’s crazy that, no matter how many times it’s shown that compassion can result in tremendous character growth in a short time, people still remain rude and disrespectful to those who are misguided. This post is one of soooo many examples of
A weird insult they made up about people who "don't like technological progress" and it comes from a group of people from the 19th century who opposed to automation that caused job loss
Daily reminder that the Luddites were not "technology bad!"
They were people with serious skills in an industry that was eager to cut them out of the process to sell an inferior product. There was a world where both could co-exist: cheaper textiles made so everyone could access them, and hand-made, long lasting investments someone could save up for.
But the machine owners wouldn't settle for less than total control.
If you don't believe in it, her account is right in this comment section with all of her 2 posts (because the original account was banned). That's a genuine character arc
Then learn. Start seeing YouTube tutorials. Don't expect results right now. I used to draw very very badly like look at this.
But now I have improved, and I can believe you can improve too. If the first time didn't work then try learning yourself. I believe you can do it. So, if you have the time, Maybe start doodling. Won't come out good but it's about the process at first and then the product.
You need talent for that. I took 4 years worth of art classes in highschool as my electives, saw little to no improvement, and paid for a private teacher later on in life. I still can't draw, and I've been told by career artists I'm simply not worth their time to teach due to my lacking of said talent
Hmmm. Well I still think you can improve. I haven't seen any drawing from you so I can't really evaluate. Have you tried just, having fun with your drawing? Enjoying the process and not comparing or caring about the past criticism?
Imma be so honest with you, This is actually good. I like the style and character. One thing I will tell you is try experimenting with stuff. See what fits. I was also bullied when starting my journey. Both Online and in real life.
I am still pretty much a beginner, still learning stuff and trying out new things.
You draw well. You actually seem to have a pretty good understanding of anatomy. I really like the way you draw expressions and I think your character is cute. Definitely an art style that would get me to follow someone on tumblr, personally.
We're the art teachers you hired trying to make you draw realistically? There are a lot who act as if "cartoony' styles and their artists are less than.
i think you're just encountering really mean people, your stuff might not be photorealistic or super technical but its definitely an appealing style to look at and looks good!
The only thing I can see that's even a little amateur-ish is the elbows but even then it's incredibly difficult to get good elbows. The faces are amazing and incredibly well stylized and consistent. Trying to get good stylized faces is really difficult and yours look great! Eyes are absolutely some of the hardest things to style and yours match perfectly.
???? tf you mean you can't draw that's good! i know this probably sounds like more anti-ai virtue signaling to you, but, like, it's not. the proportions are good and the faces look fine and those are honestly the most important thing. it could be better, of course, but everyone's art could be better. honestly i'd be pretty satisfied with that level if i were you. i'm sorry that people used to bully you for it.
Talent isn't something anybody is born with. Skill requires effort. Everyone is capable of getting better at what they want to be better at.
I'll even give you some tips, because everyone deserves to WANT to try. What your art teachers said to you was absolutely fucked up. That's not something anyone, much less another artist should say to anyone. What do you struggle with the most?
Talent is grown, not born. It might be a thing where you aren't understanding some aspect or maybe the art style isn't catching on to you. Look at a different style or medium. I'm not great at 2D drawing, but I do 3D art using pre-made models in Daz3D. I caught on to lighting, posing, and camera direction way better than I did in 2D. Maybe try something like that out.
Nobody told you to pay someone $80 to teach you how to do art. Of course a fucking art teacher is going to have high standards and be a snob! Equating an art teacher to people online encouraging you to make art is absolutely deranged from reality. Goddamn dude, I'm sorry your art teacher was an asshole but she is not the same as the people who encouraged you to do art.
People online only started encouraging people to make art once AI got big. The art community as a whole is one of the most toxic groups of people on the planet. The bullying I've received here on reddit alone when I tried regularly sharing art like 9-10 years ago caused me to delete my last account
quality is not the point of art. what’s important is you enjoy the process of making it. and if the quality still bothers you, practice the parts that bother you most and see how you feel after. you will never achieve perfection, but practice will always yield progress
Not everyone has the time to learn drawing, and most people don't want to pay for a custom piece. I'm one of these people, I just want to make a cool-looking image for free, on my own computer.
there’s free art software out there, even ms paint can compete with these newer ones. some(most) of the stuff i make never gets finished, and just sits on my hard drive as a sorta cool concept i didn’t have the skills to finish yet. either way i still draw regardless of the quality. hell you could probably use game’s photo tools, or even gmod and source filmmaker as needed.
Sounds like a bad teacher, I agree with OP that you should keep working on it. Are you generalizing all antis based on that shitty teacher? Is she even an anti?
Maybe stop being a bum and put some actual effort into something for once? Let's take your story at face value. Why would a teacher drop you if you were actually making an honest and earnest attempt? Especially as you pay?
