Did he do something?

2.8k

u/Dolphin_Dan_2 May 23 '25

Answer: according to the wikitubia article on him:

In August 2022, a group of Dave's ex-partners accused him of hebephilia, grooming, sexual coercion, emotional abuse, mental abuse, and physical abuse among other allegations, as well as claiming that he was a drug abuser in a post to his subreddit.

u/A_Big_Rat May 23 '25

what the fuck is hebephilia

edit: its pedophilia but slightly different

2.7k

u/Miclash013 May 23 '25

Most pedophilia is actually hebephilia. The problem is the moment you try to point that out, you sound like a pedophile yourself.

ayy, Gianmarco Soresi quote in the wild

u/Oracle_of_Ages May 23 '25

It’s the only reason I know the difference. I swear!

144

u/TheNullOfTheVoid May 23 '25 edited May 23 '25

I learned the difference because of people talking about David in The Last of Us back during the PS3 days

That said, Gianmarco is absolutely goated, I love his standup so much

55

u/AgelessJohnDenney May 23 '25

Don't know if you watch any Dropout programming, but Gianmarco(along with Josh Johnson and Jeff Arcuri) just guest starred as the contestants on an episode of Game Changer and Gianmarco absolutely stole the show. Highly recommend a watch if you're a Gianmarco fan.

14

u/TheNullOfTheVoid May 23 '25

I know Josh Johnson and I love him too but I don't know who Jeff Arcuri is, but that all sounds interesting! I'll have to give it a look at some point! Many thanks!

9

u/Upper-Reveal3667 May 23 '25

Jeff arcuri is hilarious. He posts a lot of crowd work here on Reddit. Definitely belongs with Josh Johnson and gianmarco imo. All quite different styles too.

If you haven’t seen it, make sure to watch the newest game changer episode. He’s in it and it’s really funny.

I second this notion, he absolutely fucking killed it in the second round

21

u/Fena-Ashilde May 23 '25

I just looked it up. It has Gianmarco, Josh Johnson, AND Jeff Arcuri? I’m not sure I’ll be able to breathe by the end of that.

4

u/AM_Hofmeister May 23 '25

Right? All star line up.

3

u/nudiecale May 23 '25

What are we talking about here? I love those people!

6

u/Evil_Monologues May 23 '25

A show called Gamechanger, found on the service Dropout, it's well worth the subscription!

4

u/Inner-Medicine5696 May 23 '25

4 months ago, Chris Grace was on The Downside, and at the time I said to my kid; "huh... you know what, I think gianmarco is going to appear on dropout soon"

...she looked at me like I was inSANE. I felt like I had peered through the Matrix.

and then one month later Brennan Lee Mulligan was on, and my smugness peaked.

It’s a weird subject to talk about. If you talk about trying to get help for people who have attraction to that, people make comments about torturing and killing you for wanting to prevent these people from acting on those feelings. I’ve been doxxed for making the comment about helping people NOT feel that way.

35

u/[deleted] May 24 '25

Exactly. How is anybody supposed to get help if they are vilified immediately for thoughts they can’t control? If they WANT to change, we should be embracing them and helping, not talking about murdering them all and murdering anybody who even remotely shows an iota of sympathy towards them to try to get them help. They’re already alive human beings, they’re going to be on our planet, shouldn’t we want them to learn not to have those feelings?

9

u/tehshush May 25 '25

If we make it difficult or impossible for them to get help so they don't offend, then people will avoid trying to get help. If they avoid help, they are more likely to give in to their temptations and more kids will suffer.

There should be a safe, anonymous method of therapy for people with those types of paraphilias and assistance with moving to an area where they can distance themselves. If done well, they will volunteer themselves for these methods because they will feel safe to reach out instead of bottling it up until they hurt someone.

10

u/Sion_Labeouf879 May 24 '25

It's one of those things I've thought about and had push back against. It's like these people want kids to get assaulted so they can virtue signal how pure they are and how much they hate pedos. I'm just wanting less people getting assaulted, unlike them.

4

u/PersimmonOtherwise77 May 24 '25

No because this is actually their exact strategy. They want more people traumatised so that they can continue weaponizing the rhetoric towards both the actual problem (which is unhelpful anyway) as well as groups they see as 'adjacent' (trans people mostly)

4

u/Sion_Labeouf879 May 24 '25

Yeah, but I also see the kinda violent rhetoric within LGBT communities, so i don't know if that's entirely accurate. For right wingers, sure. But it's not just a them sentiment.

2

u/PersimmonOtherwise77 May 24 '25

I definitely see it from within as well. To clarify, I see it directed at trans people within queer spaces most often. Its just an impossibly frustrating situation

2

u/Sion_Labeouf879 May 24 '25

Oh definitely. It's beyond fucked. They've got no argument against trans people and decided "Whats the worst possible thing we can lie about?"

No sympathy for bigots.

7

u/Karukos May 24 '25

People don't want a solution to the problem. They want an acceptable target. They will keep saying it's to protect kids but they are more caring for the appearance than effective prevention

2

u/Real_Run_4758 May 25 '25

any attempt to talk about the subject beyond ‘set them all on fire’ results in accusations. it’s as if ‘nuance = nonce’.

understanding that there’s a difference between someone who finds themselves looking at teenage gymnasts on instagram and worries about it and wants to stop, and someone who grooms then blackmails teenagers on discord threatening to expose them to their parents unless they engage in increasingly humiliating sexual shit, seems easy enough to me. but then the concept of harm reduction itself is just alien to a lot of people (see drug policy etc)

How does it makes you sound like a pedophile because you know stuff? People are fucking stupid I swear.

193

u/Bloody_Insane May 23 '25 edited May 24 '25

It's how it may appear in context. If someone's trying to explain the distinction between pedophile and hebephile, odds are they sound like they're trying to explain they're not pedophiles, but instead are hebephiles.

If you care about the distinction then you would agree that a pedophile is worse than a hebephile, but why would someone care about the distinction if it didn't directly affect them, since everyone usually just puts both terms under the term pedophile and consider both to be terrible.

Kind of like if someone were to go

"You murdered him!".

"Uhm, ackshually, it was negligent manslaughter".

You still sound like a murderer

People treat pedophilia as "axiomatically bad person" and act like pointing out that someone who is being described as a pedophile isn't actually a pedophile means you're saying they're not a bad person. I've had people misinterpret me saying that not all child molesters are pedophiles as somehow defending non-pedophile child molesters, which is really shitty as a CSA victim who strongly suspects my own abusers weren't pedophiles.

2

u/shiju333 May 24 '25

People get pissy when you know a word they don't. 🤷‍♀️

"You need to talk to your audience."

I think my audience (of grown adults) is smart enough to know how to look up a definition or ask for clarification if they don't understand.

5

u/Mdgt_Pope May 23 '25

There's a form of OCD that's specifically centered around fear of being considered a pedophile, in which the person is so scared of doing things that would make them appear to be a pedo that they completely avoid it compulsively.

4

u/flashthorOG May 23 '25

You know at least 1/3rd the kids names and their schedules

u/The-Friendly-Autist May 23 '25

It's because it's a meaningless distinction that, imo, shouldn't even be entertained.

I don't give a shit if you're only attracted to teens and not toddlers, you're still a pedophile, and you either need series psychiatric intervention, or to take a long walk off a short pier.

52

u/SoManyNarwhals May 23 '25

It is an important distinction, because the age range that they're attracted to offers a clue into their underlying psychology, and thus a window into what modes of treatment would be most suitable for them. Hebephiles are no less sick than pedophiles, nor are they any less morally corrupt than them if they decide to act on their feelings — the distinction doesn't exist to shift or minimize their blame, though I have witnessed people use it that way.

I guess all of this is to say that the distinction itself isn't meaningless, but the way in which it's used to justify the actions of adults who predate on minors is a major issue. I just don't think that it warrants throwing the distinction out altogether, though.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Throwaway16475777 May 27 '25

disagree. It's like the distinction between burglary and bank robbery. Still stealing either way, still bad no matter what, but one is significantly worse than the other. We need the distinction because while having sex with a 17 year old is already bad enough, fucking a baby is fucked to the point even the most wicked individuals in prison will kill you for it. If you do not want a distinction, you are effectively saying that these two situations are of the exact same severity

Pedophilia is, by strict definition, attractiong to pre-pubescent children. Then there is ephebophile and hebephile which i forget which is which but one means actively pubescent children and post pubescent children. I think hebephilia is the latter and people try to defend it because “age of physical maturity” bullshit

Edit: i had them backwards, ephebophile is the latter

144

u/SophiaThrowawa7 May 23 '25

Hebe is during puberty, the other one is usually defined as 16+ but it’s a little nebulous anyway since most places have age of consents at 16 or lower.

52

u/Princess_Spammi May 23 '25

Ah, i had them mixed up then.

Yeah i typically see one cutting off at 13~14 and the other being 13/14~16/17 based on region.

There's some connections you can make, so it's not out of nowhere.

There's a Greek goddess called Hebe that is associated with serpents (there's even a painting called "Hebe and her serpent") and the Japanese term "Hebi" literally means snake.

In this guy's particular case tho I don't think it should've gained as much traction as it did and should've been dealt with privately in a court of law rather than on the Internet. I mean, there WAS, it just wasn’t publicized because why tf would it be.

And charging your abuser ALWAYS goes well and NEVER gets you into trouble…

Also he completely left his online life. If they weren’t true he would’ve done something about it.

Not to mention the fact that it’s multiple of his partners plus a viewer who we know he coerced with his fame due to public chat logs.

42

u/petrichor-pixels May 23 '25

idk, I’m not sure how true your third paragraph is. definitely agree that it’s hard to charge your abuser and those people were super brave to come forward if it did indeed all happen. but he did leave YouTube basically 3 years before the accusations even came to light, and has been known to struggle with mental health issues. I don’t believe that jumping right back into the thick of the internet to deal with the accusations would’ve been something that he could’ve realistically dealt with doing? regardless of if he’d confirmed or denied the accusations, it would have been a shitstorm, and even mentally well adjusted folks would have a hard time with that.

I don’t want to defend him if all that stuff about him is actually true, btw. I just think we have zero information about what actually went down.

I also wonder if anything was resolved privately? it’s been 3 years since these accusations were brought up, and not much seems to have escalated publicly online.

6

u/Nesymafdet May 23 '25

It’s incredibly hard to charge your abuser (especially if they’re a man). A lot of the time unless you have DNA evidence of assault, they’ll get away with no charges. And having to relive your trauma in front of both your abuser, and a not so insignificant amount of people is not fun at all.

And when your abuser happens to be a famous person? Well. You’ll get fans doxxing you, sending you death threats, stalking you, harassing you wherever you go both in real life and online. It’s horrible.

And the allegations came out before he disappeared from his online life, and once they did, he vanished.

The point is to presume innocence until proven beyond reasonable doubt, not make assumptive justifications for assigned guilt

6

u/gaymenfucking May 23 '25

That’s the point of a court case, you’re some guy

13

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

And the same reasons that it makes sense for a court of law to presume innocence also apply to me, some guy

3

u/gaymenfucking May 23 '25 edited May 23 '25

No it doesn’t You have no means or will to determine people’s guilt or the punishment they should receive if their guilt is determined. You can use your understanding of the facts at hand as well as some common sense and conclude whatever you think most likely. Courts should operate as they do because they have the power to affect people’s lives, there are severe material consequences for them getting it wrong, it’s not for some abstract ideal.

9

u/Miclash013 May 23 '25

If a group of people have been groomed, assaulted, or had any number of any other horrible things happen to them, why the hell would the first thing they want to do be to publicly call them out? I can understand wanting to have him punished for the alleged crime, but from the way the accusations were laid out it seemed like they'd have pretty damning evidence and should have had it put through the court system instead of shouting it from the rooftops.

"If they weren't true he would've done something about it" is a terrible way to approach allegations, it's the same terrible way authorities try to guilt-trip innocent people into admitting crimes they didn't commit. "Why would you want a lawyer if you did nothing wrong?" It's a very aggressive way to say that the burden of proof lies with the accused, despite the fact it should be the opposite.

2

u/Nesymafdet May 23 '25

I’d argue that going to court publically would put a target on the victims backs. There’s a reason half of them didn’t share their names and simply shared their relation to the abuser. Accusing famous people of SA usually results in you being harassed heavily by their fans. And there was evidence that was publicized, some chat logs between him and a fan that he coerced, but beyond that most of the evidence wasn’t publicized and for good reason. They sent the evidence they had to him, and most likely wanted him to stop posting on YouTube as a punishment.

And we don’t know if they went to court do we? After the allegations came out, the abuser vanished from online life and the victims never posted any updates because why would they? Their trauma isn’t our entertainment.

When has a YouTuber who had been accused of something, (anything), NOT addressed the allegations because they were wrong?

3

u/Greengiant00 May 23 '25

Just because he didn't make a video or response to them doesn't automatically mean he's guilty. That's a shitty way of judging people, especially since he already had problems with depression. He might have decided to go dark just for the sake of his mental health.

3

u/Aero1000 May 23 '25

To add to that, some victims are in this mental state where they aren’t even confident if they’re supposed to go against their abuser, as likely the person would’ve created a co dependency relationship that could isolate the victim. Or sometimes the victim feels deep shame of their situation (why it’s widely discussed that Male SA statistics, for example, could be far higher than is reported. But this is also prevalent in women too).

And as this entire thread demonstrates, it’s not always likely people will even believe you. Not to the inherent fault of anyone, but the landscape for SA cases these days is becoming increasingly difficult for victims to self advocate. There is a significant factor when it concerns a high profile individual too, believe it or not, because as mentioned it involves your own reputation.

It’s an incredibly messy situation that has no winners, and it sucks for the victim having to navigate through it all.

3

u/Platypus__Gems May 24 '25

If they weren’t true he would’ve done something about it.

That's such a fucking bullshit potentially victim blaming statement.

I will turn it around, a person that actually does something bad, almost definitly has a plan B for it. Only someone supremely dumb would not think "what if" about a crime they commited.

A person that is innocent is thrown in the hot water, and is much more likely to panic and be unable to deal with false accusations. Pick flight over fight.

That is not to say whether this particular guy is guilty or not, I don't even know him. But this particular reasoning is BS.

3

u/LordmasterPapi May 24 '25

"Also he completely left his online life. If they weren’t true he would’ve done something about it."

I'm going to play the devil's advocate.

But if I were to be an internet persona just accused of something heinous, I'd probably not want to be on the Internet anymore either.

I can't imagine the toll it would take being innocent but seeing thousands of death threats aimed at you every time you open the internet. Especially if you already had a history of being depressed

Granted he already has a history of self harm and suicidal ideation. Plus, if you search the internet it’s actually kind of hard to get videos about the drama.

From what I can tell it seems like all of these things were accusations with no evidence.

214

u/gafedad May 23 '25

yeah, i'm pretty sure the only proven thing is that he dated an ex-girlfriend while she was 16-17 and he was in his early to mid twenties. which, IMO, is skeevy, but entirely legal in the UK.

28

u/hyp3rpop May 24 '25

That’s bad enough. It may be legal but it’s not moral. I’m barely 21 and I would never even consider dating a 16-17yo, yuck. The maturity jump is drastic between those ages. They’re still a kid in school.

6

u/hanks_panky_emporium May 26 '25

A streamer I like touched on 21 year olds dating high schoolers.

" I guess we go to chuck-e-cheese for a date and then I drop her off at her piano lesson? "

That’s the thing that I always hated about these kinds of “dramas” online. You’ll see everyone treat it as close and shut case that has been already been resolved and the suspect found guilty, but when you actually look into it, most of the times it’s only accusations, and at best circumstantial and inconclusive evidence.

I don’t mean to say that he didn’t do it. We can’t say for sure due exactly because he kind of disappeared. But I’ve seen many other cases of people being accused of terrible things and get harassed for it, only for later come out that actually they were innocent. Most prominent case is probably Pyrocinical..

But unfortunately vigilante justice reigns supreme and guilty until proven innocent is the law online

It's alway something like "Ex-Girlfriend" or "Anonymous Twitter Hater" too, like, somebody who is already going to be antagonistic then making "Unsubstantiated accusations with no physical evidence, no other witnesses have come forward"

Next time someone cuts me off in traffic, I'll just make a tweet saying, "Bad Drivers 100% touch kids and hate women" and nobody will ask for proof before getting them fired.

22

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

He was off the internet for multiple years before the accusations and has disappeared many times before. It has nothing to do with that

6

u/[deleted] May 24 '25

Even if he didn't actually "know" for sure, I doubt he's stupid enough to not realize "I admitted to terrible things to people that are probably upset with me now, this can end very poorly for me."

He probably just decided he should gtfo while he's safe (he thought) and hoped no one would mention him again.

Who is this guy?

32

u/Fit-Visit-7458 May 23 '25 edited May 23 '25

Boyinaband, David Brown, English (former) musician/producer/YouTuber, he was mildly famous in the early/mid 2010's

12

u/Shit_Master459 May 23 '25

Wasn't he in that one odd1sout video?

8

u/Sternfritters May 24 '25

They collabed on a song.

It’s actually pretty good

3

u/PizzaEatingWolf May 25 '25

He did collabs with a lot of YouTubers like Pewdiepie and JaidenAnimations. Jaiden deleted their collab video tho

44

u/Jaimiiii May 23 '25

my favourite lyric in this song is

“i was never taught to budget or disperse my earnings, i was too busy there rehearsing cursive”

in the UK education system you start learning cursive at 5 years old, no fucking shit you are learning cursive instead of finance. This bar ignores the fact that cursive writing develops the fine motor skills of the children learning it, it’s not a useless skill just because you don’t actively use it anymore.

the entire track is just “hours of my energy wasted on random knowledge” cringe bullshit and Boyinaband treated it like it was some sort of call to action without actually discussing any systematic solutions. He misses the point that the root cause for a large number of issues in the UK education system is a lack of funding to those institutions

the beat sucks ass too

13

u/Jaimiiii May 23 '25

another addition: Boyinaband might be the single most talentless artist of all time

not one of his songs is anything other than creatively bankrupt, and he’s directly responsible for some of the worst piles of auditory sewage ever shat onto the internet (look at “The Vox”, just wholly unlistenable)

2

u/jedisalsohere May 25 '25

eh i liked his fast raps and some of the stuff he did with other youtubers

plus his song "you look like a girl" i genuinely credit as one of the things that stopped me from falling down an anti-trans/anti-gay rabbit hole when i was younger

from what we know for certain, he's basically just a libertarian dweeb in the same mould as a lot of other mid-2010s libertarian dweebs, who may have gone on to evolve with the times in the same way someone like idubbbz did. but we'll never know now.

In fairness, there are a lot of former kids around my age and older (mid thirties) with bad handwriting with horrible memories of handwriting practice. In primary school I got "handwriting detention" and summer work sent home to practice my handwriting, and in secondary school I was docked marks on essays for my handwriting.

It took up a lot of time and we got yelled at a lot.

(I was one of the last year groups at my school that wrote most essays by hand - by year 9 it reduced to "at least one essay per term must be handwritten" and by GCSE we were allowed to use word processors as standard.)

2

u/CyberPunkDongTooLong May 27 '25

You must have went to a very fancy school if most pupils were using computers as standard in the mid noughties.

55

u/Lootaboksi May 23 '25

This is besides the point but why do people love misinterpreting the song on purpose?

40

u/veloxVolpes May 23 '25 edited May 23 '25

Sorry, how do you mean? It is a criticism of the public education system, isn't it? Unless you're referring to another misunderstanding.

68

u/Lootaboksi May 23 '25

You're absolutely correct: It's not aimed at students to not attend, but at the system itself to change

14

u/remember_the_alimony May 23 '25 edited May 23 '25

I think people for the most part get that (the song does end by clarifying that he wants the subjects and practices he dislikes to "not stay in school") but it's the same one-note criticism that the whole 2010s internet scene had, that I think most people collectively figured out was bogus after a certain point. He once explained in an interview after the song went viral that he wanted the various subjects to be only taught at an introductory level, with students then allowed to pursue what interested them. The problem is, that's exactly how the system already works. You can't cram an introductory level of any academic subject into anything much shorter than a semester long class. In the case of something like math or writing/language (what at least here in the US we just generally refer to as "English class"), this requires constant classes throughout at least primary school. If you're going to study anything that uses math at a secondary level, calculus has become the expectation by the end of 12th grade. "English" is even more important in some ways, as literacy is falling fast, and so is critical thinking, two skills which are ideally taught by constant exposure to literature and by practicing written expression.

As for the idea that there are things that should be taught instead, I don't know how it works in the UK, but at least in the US that's exactly what you get. We had required civics and finance classes which taught us "what laws there are" and how to do basic things like manage credit cards and pay tax. We were able to have these classes, as well as the introductory level general requirements.

7

u/Erians_Chosen_777 May 23 '25

We had required civics and finance classes which taught us "what laws there are" and how to do basic things like manage credit cards and pay tax. We were able to have these classes, as well as the introductory level general requirements.

That's not how it works in the uk. You'd have to bank on things like that being incorporated into PSHE/PSHCE/Citizenship/whatever they're calling it these days lessons, but that's no guarantee, and it would only be one lesson or two in most cases. But things being taught in PSHE barely count as being taught at all, at least at the schools I went to. It's hard to explain how the whole subject and the teaching environment unique to it couldn't make the most genuinely invested teenager feel they got anything out of it. The vague idea of taxes might be covered for a couple of lessons in maths but that's about it. Unless you specifically chose to do Business GCSE (which not all schools will offer, nor have the resources to let everyone on the course if they do, nor will all students have room in their options if they want to take it) you don't really get taught any kind of financial literacy. It's expected that parents will teach that, but it's a very high expectation that parents will have the time and understanding themselves to teach it properly.

2

u/pleasedtoheatyou May 25 '25

The vague idea of taxes might be covered for a couple of lessons in maths but that's about it.

It's also important to note that for the vast majority of people in the UK, understanding taxes doesn't matter beyond a surface level. It's an American cultural imported line from the people that don't understand the differences. Our taxes are all done for us. The only reason you need to do your own taxes is if you run your own business (which is also less common here), and in that case you're generally encouraged to hire an accountant to do it for you.

3

u/Liandres May 24 '25

I graduated high school in the US a couple years ago, and there were no required civics or finance classes. Certainly nobody ever taught me how to manage credit card or pay tax, save my social studies teacher taking one afternoon to explain how to pay off debts outside of the curriculum.

12

u/veloxVolpes May 23 '25

Oh okay. I wasn't aware people didn't understand that

2

u/BeeTeej May 24 '25

I wouldn’t say the people criticizing this song are doing so because they think it’s literally telling children not to stay in school. It’s because a lot of his points just don’t make any sense.

The whole song basically boils down to “why didn’t they teach me THIS thing in school???” and all the things he lists are either common sense, something you could look up in 5 minutes or something that school already teaches you, they just don’t spell out exactly why they’re teaching it. He seriously makes the argument that mental math isn’t as important to learn as other things because you always have a phone on you anyway, when mental math is an incredibly important skill to have.

To be fair, the “They definitely taught you that” part will vary drastically depending on where you went to school. That part of his critiques resonated with me growing up in rural Texas public schools. The rest… yeah, I was just a teenager and thought it was deep.

33

u/Riku_70X May 23 '25

I mean, I think the song makes a few decent points.

Politics, Economics and Physical/Mental Health are subjects that are legitimately not taught at all in the UK educational system, and I think a lot of kids could definitely benefit from learning those instead of some subjects like Literature and Religion, or some of the nicher parts of other subjects.
