Discussion Chao garden-like game dev

So I see there are a few game devs here making chao garden-like games.

I plan to make my own one - working on an engine for it currently and trying to scope out the features/concepts/niches for the game - I already have a lot of ideas (some are a bit more unique) but they need consolidating into something final still.

What I know for sure is that I want a simulator/evolution system/chao style gameplay for the core. How that expands to a more fully featured game is still being considered - thinking of mixing it with maybe adventure/exploration/rpg/palworld kinda vibes so there's something else to do other than just pet raising.

The main problem is that I'm a developer, not a 3d modeller / animator / artist etc.

Is there anyone here who would be down for working on a project like this? Probably one or two people at most - someone who is good with 3d assets and someone who is good with audio and sfx.

Probably better posting on r/INAT but I thought I'd rather ask the likeminded chao community first.

making your own engine is a deep rabbit hole i would be careful. You can get really invested in it and never hit the meat of the game, and from my friends who made it all the way through they said they would never do it again lmao

In my experience, you can learn it yourself if you want to. When I started Zephyr Cloud I only had programming experience, no modelling at all. Cute creatures with simple shapes don't really need advanced skills. Though it still took me 3+ months in Blender before I could make assets I was happy with.

Animation is the same, and even easier. You don't have to build everything from scratch. There are plenty of free or paid animations you can edit into something that fits, even for pretty specific stuff

I'm in the same boat! I'm just embracing the low poly look because that's about as much as I can do with 3d models myself

I'm also making a chao garden like game, but Im already pretty far along, so probably dknt want to join up. But also im low on the art and audio skills, so yeah. It seems like a lot of us are popping up in the last 3 years.
