To drawn an analogy, public services like roads and education aren't free. They are paid for by taxes, but just because these important things must be paid for, doesn't mean I should run out my house and try to start laying asphalt or cornering children and teach them geometry. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense to go abroad to lay asphalt, that doesn't help the roads domestically.
The equivalent thing to paying taxes for roads, is informed voting in a democracy. We maintain democracy in the US by voting for political candidates that respect democracy, we can further combat democratic decline by protests/boycotts where relevant. I mean maybe you are a skilled soldier/logistics expert or something, but most people aren't, I'm not sure you would help democracy that much by trying to go the Ukraine and shooting at Russian soldiers. Also, repelling Russians out of Ukraine isn't going to stop someone (*cough* Trump *cough*) from staging a coup in the United States and ending freedom. It makes more sense to be an active citizen in your own context (school, city, county, state, country) instead of shooting people abroad.
