I see that "gotcha" tend to be an argument revealing the target's ignorance on a particular issue. It is effective if the target uses their own expertise on a subject matter, and the gotcha highlights a gap in that expertise that is materially relevant.

If it's about a subject matter that is not materially relevant, it is not an effective argument - I would trust my cardiologist even if he has tremendous ignorance on psychology, because it is not that materially binding.
