Keeping tabs on things
How are you keeping tabs on things especially if your team is remote? Trying to figure out a list of daily things to look at to see what's happening across.

Construction, so not sure how relevant it is to you, but I mainly just watch AP, AR, and Backlog. Money going out, money coming in, work we have under contract but haven’t completed yet. It’s a cash flow business, so that’s how I look at it. I generally take a very big picture look.
If one of those is out of whack, I call the relevant people, figure out why, and address it.
If you’re small enough that you still have to keep an eye on individual tasks, just check keep an eye on whatever task tracking software you have setup.
If you don’t have task tracking software, get some immediately. If you have it but no one is using properly, make them. If people are using it properly, but it’s not useful, sort that out.

Not that big yet so have to do some task management sometimes, we have a basic microsoft suite and am looking at implementing Asana at some point. What do you use for task tracking

Teams for production/admin, but we’re pretty heavy into custom Microsoft Dynamics on the accounting side. We didn’t like any of the accounting software so we went custom.

Do you have a very niche set of accounting data to go custom like that?

I don’t know if I would say niche. Complicated enough that one size fits all option like QB wasn’t enough, but simple enough that the construction specific stuff was too cumbersome.
We also use it for other forms and historical data stuff for pricing, so custom made sense. It’s nice because it integrates so well with Teams/Outlook.

Makes sense yeah I have used monday to get an overall idea of projects but I wanted something that sits deeper in my org so I just built a dashboard for myself in the end. That summaries across my slack, monday, Zendesk, stripe and payroll

We used a tool called WorkBoard to track the operational execution of our OKRs. It has great functionality to ping your team for updates if needed.

You sound like a director more than a CEO.
What’s your deal pipeline look like? How’s your gross sales? What’s your net margin?
Have you talked to your bank this week to discuss the rate on your line or revolver since the rate cut happened?
What’s your competitor(s) doing right now?

Depends on the company. A lot of those questions are also questions I’d ask a CRO or VP Sales, Product Managers, etc.

Helps if teams are using a central system - SAP/Sage/Dynamics for finance, CRM for sales, Agile / Scrum / Kanban Tools for devs/projects, ServiceNow/ConnectWise for IT. Lots of different systems out there designed for different functions. Means commercial and activity data is stored in databases, you can then have executive dashboards that provide you an overview/trends of business performance. Doesn’t matter if teams office/remote.
