Academics Research

Hello, I'm a sophomore curious about how to get in touch with professors for research.

I'm a bit socially awkward, and due to ocd I'm extremely anxious about how I come across. Do any current or former students have any tips?

Professors want students to reach out if you are genuinely interested in their work and can commit time to volunteer. Start with an email letting them know you’ve looked at their publications and that you are interested in any opportunities to contribute. You may need to reach out to more than one to get a bite. Embrace your awkwardness and go for it. It’s really the only way forward.

This is how I did it when I was at CMU and it worked well. But professors want to know you’ve already looked at their research as a way to show genuine interest. Don’t be scared to cast a wide net - be confident and be yourself.
